BETHANY, Okla. — Henderson State got big contributions up and down the lineup on Saturday and swept Southern Nazarene with 25-12 and 8-1 wins.
Freshman Alec Lewis, the reigning GAC Player of the Week, stole the show for the Reddies in the doubleheader by hitting four home runs in the two games — three of which came in the first contest of the day.Â
The Reddies (10-11, 7-5) have now won seven of their last nine GAC contests. HSU returns to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Southern Arkansas in non-conference play.
Game Two: Henderson State 25, Southern Nazarene 12
The Reddies blasted 20 hits and eight home runs in just seven innings in the first game Saturday to crush Southern Nazarene 25-12 and clinch the series with the Crimson Storm.Â
Five different players had multi hit games for Henderson. Joe Myers and Caleb Carr each had four hits and three RBIs, Greyson Stevens had three hits and six RBIs on two home runs, and Alec Lewis had the best day of any Reddie with three hits, seven RBIs and three home runs. Myers, Danny Mitchell Jr. and Brinson Williams all also hit round-trippers in the win for HSU.
Henderson put up crooked numbers in multiple innings. The Reddies scored five runs on four hits in the second, four runs on three hits in the third, six runs on six hits in the fourth, and a staggering nine runs on five hits in the fifth. HSU's largest lead of the day was 19-run advantage, 24-5.
Ten of the Reddies' 20 hits in the victory were for extra bases. HSU drew 10 walks in the game and had an astounding 56 at-bats in just seven innings. Spencer Taack got the win for Henderson on the mound after pitching 4.1 innings and striking out seven.
Game Three: Henderson State 8, Southern Nazarene 1
Henderson State broke open a 1-1 tie with seven runs in the sixth inning to defeat SNU 8-1 and sweep the Crimson Storm in the weekend series.Â
Taylor Langston, in his first start of the season, gave up just one hit and no runs in two innings of work, and reliever Matthew Baker did the rest, as he pitched the final five innings for the Reddies and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out 10 SNU batters.
An RBI single from Kaden Argenbright put Henderson up 1-0 in the first inning, but SNU kept the Reddies scoreless for the next five and tied things up with a run of its own in the fourth.
After back-to-back singles from Argenbright and Dalton Guthrie led off the sixth for HSU, Alec Lewis did what he has become accustomed to doing in the last two weeks and drove a three-run home run over the fence to give the Reddies a 4-1 advantage. It was Lewis's fourth home run of the day and sixth of the last week. Henderson went on to bat around in the frame and plated four more runs to surge to an 8-1 lead. Baker limited the Crimson Storm to just one hit in the final two innings to close it out for HSU.
Argenbright finished with three hits and four RBIs in the win for the Reddies, while Lewis had three hits and three RBIs that all came on his home run in the sixth.Â
