Reddies Look to Build on Hot Start Versus UAM

GAME COVERAGE LINKS | HSU 2021 BASEBALL GAMEDAY INFORMATION

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — After opening GAC action with a sweep in Oklahoma, Henderson State returns home to host instate rival Arkansas-Monticello in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

REDDIES REPORT
- The Reddies (5-1, 3-0) exploded out of the gates in conference play last weekend when they swept Southern Nazarene on the road in Bethany, Oklahoma. HSU dominated the series in every way and out-scored the Crimson Storm 45-6 over just 21 innings of action. Henderson racked up 43 hits in three games, crushed eight home runs and batted .439 as a team against SNU.

- Multiple players stuffed the stats sheet offensively for HSU against the Crimson Storm. Joe Myers had two home runs, a double, nine RBIs and four walks in three games, Kaden Argenbright was 8-for-12 at the plate with four doubles, Alec Lewis was 6-for-10 with a home run and a triple, and Cade Tucker finished 4-of-6 with seven RBIs and two home runs.

- With the emphatic series win, Henderson moved to the top of GAC in multiple categories. The Reddies lead the league in team batting average (.335) and home runs (12), and are second in runs scored (59), team ERA (3.40) and fielding percentage (.976). Myers leads the conference in RBIs (15) and is second in the GAC with three home runs.

- The pitching staff for HSU has been as impressive to start the year as the bats. The Reddies have collectively allowed just 17 earned runs in 45 innings of play and have struck out 43 batters while walking just 18. Matthew Baker leads the team with a 2.53 ERA in a club-high 10.2 innings of work. Austin Cross, who has gotten the first two Friday starts of the year, has a 3.12 ERA in 8.2 innings.

- Henderson's bullpen has been lockdown through six games this season. Blake Patterson, Taylor Langston, Cade Tucker and Ethan Perry have combined to pitch 7.2 scoreless innings of relief and have allowed a total of just two hits.

- A win on Friday would give the Reddies their first 4-0 start in conference play since the formation of the GAC in 2011. HSU's previous best start to league competition came in 2017 when it began 8-2 before ultimately finishing with 20 GAC victories. Henderson has not won the series against UAM since 2013.

SCOUTING UAM
- Arkansas-Monticello travels to Arkadelphia on Saturday with a record of 1-2 overall and in conference play. The Weevils dropped their opening series of the season at Northwestern Oklahoma State and lost the rubber match 13-2. UAM has been strong year in and year out under head coach John Harvey and has won 30 or more games in six of the last seven seasons.

- The Weevils are batting .225 as a team through three games and are led by infielder Jordan Johnson, who is 6-for-12 at the plate this season with two doubles and a home run. UAM has seven home runs that have come from six different players.

- The ace on the hill for Arkansas-Monticello is right-hander Matt Lundh, who was the 2019 GAC Pitcher of the Year and a 2020 Collegiate Baseball Preseason DII All-American. Lundh finished the 2019 season with an 8-1 record and a 3.39 ERA in 71.2 innings and carried a ridiculous 1.02 ERA in 17.2 innings of work in the shortened 2020 season.

- NWOSU found success offensively against the UAM pitching staff last weekend. The Rangers hit .320 as a team against the Weevils and had 26 hits in the last two games of the series alone.
