ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Mallory Brewer got her first win on the mound and Henderson State claimed its second-straight victory in the first game of the doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist, 5-4, but fell just short in game two, 6-5.
Â
The Reddies piled on 10 hits in game one and seven in game two.
Monica Monreal saw four hits through the two games while both
Abbie Moore and
Kailey Reese registered three RBIs in the two contests.
Â
GAME ONE
The first Battle of the Ravine of the season started with one run each in the first inning as the game remained knotted at one a piece into the third inning. In HSU's third at-bat, the home team saw three runs on the backs of Jordan, Monreal, and
Kailey Reese. Monreal was also responsible for one RBI in the third frame.
Â
Henderson kept the scoring going in the fourth for the Reddies' final run of the ballgame as
Czoey White crossed home plate off a Reese sacrifice-fly to center field, bringing HSU's advantage to 5-1.
Â
In what would wind up being the final at-bat of game one, the Tigers refused to go away quietly as three runs in the top of the seventh cut the deficit to one, 5-4. With a girl on third and first and two outs for OBU,
Mallory Brewer handed out one of her five strikeouts, giving Henderson the 5-4 victory.
Â
Brewer pitched all seven innings, surpassing 100 pitches in the contest. The junior pitcher saw her most strikeouts since the season opener against Delta St, retiring five Ouachita batters and only giving up two earned runs as she claimed her first win of the season.
Â
GAME TWO
It was all Ouachita Baptist for the first six innings of the second game of the doubleheader as OBU saw itself ahead 6-0 heading into the seventh and final inning. The Reddies decided to make it interesting, however, in their final at-bat.
Â
In much the same way OBU closed out game one, HSU rattled off five runs in the bottom of the seventh and four of its seven total hits. Thanks to two straight errors from the Tigers, Henderson was able to see a double from Jordan with the bases loaded bring in three runs while facing two outs.
Â
With a single from Reese, OBU saw its 6-0 lead vanish as HSU stood only one run back, 6-5, with two girls on after a stolen base from Reese put her on second and pinch runner
Alyssa Dixon on third. With one more out needed to seize the victory for the Tigers, a fly ball to the right fielder ended the Reddies' final efforts as OBU salvaged the doubleheader split, 6-5.
Â
Henderson State (3-11, 2-6) will stay home this weekend when the Harding Lady Bison come to Dee White Field for a single game on Friday, Mar. 12 at 5 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday with game one set for 12 p.m.
