ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — On the heels of four-straight wins, Henderson State faces one of its biggest tests of the season this weekend when it hosts Southern Arkansas on Friday and Saturday at Clyde Berry Field.
The Reddies and Muleriders will meet in a single game at 6 p.m. on Friday and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Arkadelphia.
REDDIES REPORT
- Henderson (13-8, 9-6) put together a big series last weekend against Southwestern Oklahoma State by taking all three games from the Bulldogs. SWOSU came to Arkadelphia leading the GAC in both team batting average and ERA, but was held to just six runs in three games and was out-scored by HSU 21-6. Thanks to the sweep, the Reddies jumped Southwestern in the conference standings and are now in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league.
-
Joe Myers earned the first GAC Player of the Week award of his career after posting big numbers against SWOSU and Arkansas Tech. Myers was 8-for-14 at the plate in four games and finished the week with seven RBIs, six runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and a triple. The senior from Little Rock leads the GAC in both RBIs (28) and runs scored (29) this season. With one run against Harding on Wednesday, Myers moved into a tie for the all-time lead in runs scored at Henderson State (126). Myers is already the program's all-time leader in walks (110) and has started 164 of the 170 games he has played at HSU in his career.
-
Kaden Argenbright has been on a tear with the bat for Henderson, and that hot streak continued on Wednesday night against Harding. Argenbright finished 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and four RBIs in the Reddies' 12-9 win. The freshman from Sulphur Springs, Texas has 19 hits in his last 10 games for HSU, which includes six multi-hit contests in that span. Argenbright has started all 21 games, carries a .375 average and leads the team with 30 hits.
-
Matthew Baker put together a great performance for HSU to help clinch the series over SWOSU last Friday. The senior right-hander pitched six innings of the seven-inning contest and allowed just one run on six hits while striking out eight Bulldog batters. Baker has a 2-0 record in six appearances and a team-leading 3.99 ERA for the Reddies this season.
- The Reddies' team batting average has surged after the sweep of SWOSU and a win over Harding on Wednesday. Henderson is now hitting .303 as a club, which ranks fourth in the GAC, and has 77 extra-base hits on the year — the third-most of any team in the conference.
- Henderson has had a tough time with Southern Arkansas in recent years. The Muleriders are 31-14 against the Reddies since the inception of the GAC and have won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the teams. HSU last won the series against SAU in 2018, when it won back-to-back one-run contests to take two of three games from the Muleriders. Â
SCOUTING SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
- Southern Arkansas arrives in Arkadelphia as winners of its last eight games and 11 of their last 12 overall. SAU is 15-5 and tied for first place in the conference standings at 11-4 in GAC play. The Muleriders have won their last three conference series and have dropped just one — a three-game sweep at the hands of Arkansas Tech.
- SAU boasts a 3.61 team ERA entering the weekend — the best mark in the GAC and a Top-25 ERA in all of DII baseball. Opposing teams are hitting just .228 against the Muleriders this season and Southern Arkansas has given up 15 fewer runs than any team in the conference through 20 games. Zach Smith has been a workhorse for SAU on the mound and has pitched a team-high 42.2 innings with a 2.53 ERA.
- Offensively, the Muleriders top hitter is Kobe Morris, who bats .413 and leads the club with 31 hits and 17 RBIs. Morris enters the weekend riding an 18-game hitting streak and has recorded two or more hits in his last five games. Morris has been held hitless in just two games this season — both of which were against Henderson State in the opening weekend of the spring at Clyde Berry Field.
