Henderson Drops Two to First-Place Tech on Sunday

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Henderson State was limited to three hits in the first game on Sunday, then saw its rally come up just short in the series finale, as Arkansas Tech took both halves of a doubleheader to sweep the weekend series at Baswell Field.

The Reddies (14-13, 10-11) will look to bounce back on Friday at 6 p.m. when they host East Central in the opener of their final home series in the regular season.

GAME ONE: Arkansas Tech 11, Henderson State 1
The Reddies were held to just three hits in the first game of the day by the Wonder Boys pitching staff and fell 11-1 in seven innings.

For the second-straight outing, HSU struck first on an RBI single from Kaden Argenbright, but Tech tied it up with a solo home run in the bottom half of the first inning and then scored five runs on three walks in the second to break it open, 6-1.

Henderson did not record a hit in the final five innings of play, as ATU tacked on four more in the fourth inning, as well as one in the seventh, to wrap it up early.

Joe Myers, who scored HSU's only run, was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk to lead the Reddies at the plate.

GAME TWO: Arkansas Tech 4, Henderson State 3
HSU showed grit in the final game of the series, and rallied to tie it in the sixth, but a late home run from Tech proved to be the difference, as the Wonder Boys swept the series with a 4-3 win.

The Reddies scored first for the third time in the series on an RBI single from Greyson Stevens in the first inning. After going in front 1-0, Henderson saw ATU hit solo home runs in the third and fourth frames to take a 2-1 lead, then plate an insurance run on a double in the fifth to make it 3-1.

With two outs in the sixth and still trailing by two runs, HSU put together a gusty two-out rally. A single from Myers and a double from Argenbright put two runners in scoring position for Daniel Colasanto, who came through with a clutch two-RBI single on a 1-2 count to tie the game, 3-3.

Henderson's momentum proved to be short-lived, as Arkansas Tech's Josh Detweiler swung things back in the Wonder Boys favor with a a lead-off home run in the bottom of the sixth. The Reddies tried to rally again in the seventh, and moved the tying run to second base with two outs, but a strikeout ended it for ATU.

Myers was 2-for-3 to lead HSU at the plate, while Matthew Baker earned a no-decision by pitching four innings and giving up just two earned runs on five hits.
