FINAL RESULTS
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - On a night where the life and legacy of the late legendary Red Wave head coach Coak Matthews was celebrated by dedication of the Coak Matthews Scoreboard, Henderson State upheld the Red Wave name by defeating cross-street rival Ouachita Baptist by a combined team score of 289-190.
The No. 12 HSU women won the night's first four events to go on to see a dominant 153-90 win and their first victory over OBU since 2019 while the No. 17 men won their 22nd straight meet over the Tigersharks, 136-100.
The night started off hot for Henderson as both 200 yard medley relay teams touched the wall first. The female quartet of
Emily Chen,
Bianca Santiago,
Mackenzie Kester and
Raven Roberts finished at 1:49.55 - nearly five whole seconds ahead of OBU's second-place team - before
Lamar Taylor,
Jaren Tippett,
Jase Pinckney and
Ty Gibbs finished ta 1:30.83 for the men.
The relay teams in the 200 free finished the end just as hot as their counterparts began the night, with
Kiara Pozvai,
Aimee Miller,
Madalyn Hall and Roberts taking first at 1:39.30. With the Tigersharks half a body length ahead heading into the final leg, Roberts, a true freshman from Avondale, Arizona, ran her opponent down for the 21 hundredths of a second victory.Â
In the final event of the night, the high-powered men's 200 free relay team was without Taylor, but that mattered little in determining the outcome as
Jack Armstrong,
Patryk Dabrowski, James Graham and
Oscar Patten touched at 1:24.60, outswimming Ouachita Baptist by nearly two seconds.
The rest of the night consisted of the Red Wave women winning nine of the 11 individual events, including finishing one, two, three in the night's final individual event as Santiago (1:06.24),
Jessica Bongfeldt (1:08.33) and
Madeleine Gaia (1:12.64) occupied the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke.
On the men's side, seven individual events went in favor of the Red Wave, including the 200 free that saw Armstrong (1:44.13) and senior
Ty Gibbs (1:45.54)Â finish one, two, respectively, Gibbs' ability to edge out OBU's 200 free swimmer by 34 hundredths of a second in what was just the third event of the night gave HSU the momentum the rest of the way to come on top.Â
Henderson State will now have a couple weeks off before heading to Cleveland, Mississippi for the mid-season Delta State Christmas Invite Dec. 10-13 in what will be the final event of the 2022 season for the No. 12 Red Wave women and No. 17 Red Wave men,
One Heart. One Mind. One Team.
