ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The No. 8 Henderson State Red Wave men and No. 23 women combined to defeat Missouri-St. Louis in HSU's second dual meet of the fall season, 247-206.
Henderson's men handled (RV) UMSL, 151-83, while the No. 23 women fell short to the (RV) Tritons, 123-96. The Red Wave men, who came in at No. 8 in the first edition of the CSCAA Top-25 Preseason Poll, improve to 2-0 on the season.
The red-and-gray men dominated the relay events of the evening, beginning with the 400 medley relay made up of
Lamar Taylor,
Jaren Tippett,
Jase Pinckney and
Patryk Dabrowski. The quartet touched the wall first at 3:22.48 for 11 points while HSU's 'B' relay placed third for an additional two points as the Red Wave men held the early 13-4 lead.
After the HSU women earned four points with their second-place finish in the 400 medley relay, true freshman
Tayden Drake added another four points in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:03.05. Team captain
Mackenzie Kester gave the women their first win of the night in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.90, beating UMSL's second-place swimmer by nine hundredths of a second.
Sandwiching Kester's win was
Jack Armstrong and
Jase Pinckney, who claimed the top spot in the 200 free and 50 free, respectively. Armstrong came out of the gate with a 21.71 on his first 50 before pacing second place by nearly three whole seconds at 1:40.58. Pinckney then followed Kester's performance with a 21.20 for first place.
Emma Jorgensen and
Bianca Santiago occupied the top two times in the 200 IM, touching at 2:13.21 and 2:13.54, respectively, to add 13 points to HSU's total. Taylor for the men replicated Jorgensen's first-place finish with his own 1:55.84 to out-swim the competition in the same event.
Henderson swept each of the next four events as
Isabelle Andrews (2:13.46) and Armstrong (1:52.89) won the 200 butterfly while
Kiara Pozvai (52.11) and Dabrowski (46.56) claimed the 100 free.
Mark Eberhard on the men's side tallied the last individual victory of the night for either side in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.41.
Both Red Wave programs saved their most dominant performances as Pozvai, Andrews,
Valerie Grigar and Kester took the 400 free relay by nearly 12 whole seconds, touching the pad first at 3:36.97. The men matched that with their own near-12 second victory as Armstrong, Dabrowski,
Tate Sloan and Taylor finished at 3:03.33, which currently serves as the fastest time in NCAA Division II.
Both Henderson programs will have a couple weeks off before the season's first swimming edition of the Battle of the Ravine from Wells Natatorium Friday, Oct. 27.
