ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State Athletics lost one of its legendary figures on Thursday when Reddie icon Clyde Berry passed away at the age of 92.
A baseball and football student-athlete at HSU from 1950 to 1952, Berry coached football at Henderson from 1967 to 1970, where he led the Reddies to a 26-14 record in four seasons and the 1969 AIC title, but is perhaps best remembered for his two stints as the skipper of the Reddie baseball program from 1963 to 1966 and from 1982 to 1987.
The winningest baseball coach in Henderson State history for nearly 40 years, Berry compiled a record of 205-129-2 directing the Reddies on the diamond, and won AIC championships in both 1965 and 1982. He was named NAIA Baseball Coach of the Year in 1966 and AIC Coach of the Year in 1982. Berry was inducted into the Reddie Hall of Honor as a member of the inaugural class in 1997 and the baseball complex at Henderson State was renamed Clyde Berry Field in his honor in the fall of 2005.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, December 18 at 10 a.m. at Calvary Tabernacle in Queen City, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to the Clyde Berry Memorial Baseball Scholarship at the HSU Foundation.
