CLEVELAND, Miss. - It did not take long for the Henderson State Red Wave program to make waves at the 2023 Delta State Christmas Invitational. After just the first day, three HSU school records were set in the men's 200 medley relay, the 800 freestyle relay and the 200 free.
In the day's first events,
Tayden Drake for the Red Wave women got eighth in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 1057.08 before
Hayden Jestes placed third as the highest finishing Red Wave male in the 1000 free, touching at 9:48.95.
The first relay events of the week started with the women's 200 medley relay as
Kiara Pozvai,
Emma Jorgensen,
Isabelle Andrews and
Mackenzie Kester claimed a third place finish with a time of 1:43.57, edging out Division I Incarnate Word's quartet by nearly three whole seconds.
The Red Wave men's group of
Lamar Taylor,
Jack Armstrong,
Jase Pinckney and Patryk Dabrowksi followed by delivering the first record-breaking performance of the day with a first-place time of 1:26.66, smashing the old school record of 1:27.86, which was set at last year's DSU Christmas Invite.
After
Gavin Hanner, Sergio Gonzalez and
Logan Wetterling earned sixth, seventh and eighth place finishes, respectively, in the 1-meter diving, the men's 800 free relay delivered an encore record-setting performance. Armstrong, Dabrowski,
Tate Sloan and Armstrong bested the previously-held record of 6:38.46 with a new time of 6:34.58 as HSU finished 4 hundredths of a second behind first place Incarnate Word.
Henderson State's time in the 800 free relay also qualified the quartet for Nationals. Additionally, joining the record swim was Amstrong with his school-best 200 free for the race's opening leg. Armstrong's time of 1:35.56 beat teammate Sloan's previous school-record time of 1:37.97.
Both Red Wave programs will return to Ronald G. Mayers Aquatic Center tomorrow for day two of the Delta State Christmas Invitational.
