Baseball Sees First Road GAC Series Against Rangers

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State baseball will play its second Great American Conference series of the young 2023 season against Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Oklahoma in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. followed by a single game Sunday at p.m.

REDDIES REPORT
Henderson State opened GAC play with a three-game sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State in front of the home fans at Clyde Berry Field. Luke Farrar was named the league's Player of the Week after his efforts in the conference opener, registering four hits, two of which were home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored.

The Reddies, who were receiving votes in the latest National College Baseball Writers Association Poll, were one of just three teams in the league to sweep their opening conference opponent, joining Arkansas-Monticello and Arkansas Tech. Henderson is currently second in the league standings.

As a team, HSU is batting .303, which is fourth in the GAC. Leading the effort is Luke Rice, who is sixth among league-leaders after hitting .444 through 10 games, having logged a team-high 16 hits while being tied for the team-lead with three home runs (Luke Farrar). Ryan Galvan has gotten the most work on the mound, throwing 17.1 innings while carrying a team-best 2.60 ERA.

Saturday will be the Reddies' second road contest of the season as HSU will be looking for its first win away from Clyde Berry Field. Henderson has taken two of the last three series' against Northwestern when playing in Alva. Last season in the red-and-gray's first true road series in conference action, HSU dropped two of three games in Monticello to the Boll Weevils.

After Greyson Stevens set the program's all-time hits record, Kaden Argenbright now looks to climb the hitting ranks. With 171 career hits, Argenbright is currently tied with Joe Myers (2017-21) for the ninth-most hits with 171. With five more base-knocks this weekend, the Sulphur Springs, Texas native could move into a tie for fifth alongside Hunter Mayall (2012-16). Argenbright is also currently tied for the third-most RBIs at Henderson with 117.

SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA ST.
The Rangers are 7-5 through 12 games, but took just one game from Ouachita Baptist in their conference-opening series. Most recently, NWOSU defeated Emporia State at Glass Family Field at Myers Stadium, 6-3, where the home team earned all six runs off six solo homer runs, two of which came off the bat of shortstop Harley Shaffer.

Northwestern has three guys hitting .300 or better as sophomore outfielder Jon Shaffer leads the team with a .419 batting average. Hagen Barcello, who has started all 12 games for the Rangers, paces the team with both 17 hits and 13 RBIs. Right-handed pitcher Dylan Collins has spent the most time on the bump for NWOSU, holding a 1-2 record through 15.1 innings of work.

The red-and-black are 6-0 when playing at home and have notched double-digit runs in three of those games. The Rangers are averaging just over 11 hits per game on their home field and have hit at least one home run in all but one game. In fact, NWOSU is second in the league with 15 homers this season; 13 of them have come when playing at Myers Stadium.
