Baseball Falls in Opening Twin Bill Against Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – No. 20 Henderson State fell in the first day of the weekend series to Arkansas Tech in the twin bill, 9-6 and 12-6. The weekend series will conclude tomorrow with a stand-alone game at 1 p.m.

Luke Rice finished the doubleheader going 4-for-9 at the plate, including three hits in the first game of the day, with two RBIs while Greyson Stevens tallied two RBIs in each contest. Logan Cowart recorded just his second three-hit game of his collegiate career in the first outing.

Ryan Galvan earned the no-decision on the mound in game one after a two-hit, one-run five innings with two strikeouts. Joshua Saulsbury operated as the final pitcher in the day's final game, going 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit while matching Galvan with two strikeouts.

GAME 1: Arkansas Tech 9, Henderson St. 6
The Reddies out-hit Arkansas Tech to kick off the doubleheader, 13-8, and used that to jump out to a 6-1 lead after five and a half innings. After claiming four hits and two runs in the top of the third, ATU grabbed one run in the fourth before HSU opened things up in the sixth. A Cowart two-RBI double was met with a Stevens two-RBI double to establish the five-run advantage.

Unfortunately for Henderson, the sixth also held the Wonder Boys' biggest frame. After starting pitcher Ryan Galvan allowed just one run and two hits through five innings of work, Tech took advantage of Galvan's day being done prior to the sixth frame with three singles, a double and a home run cut the red-and-gray's lead to one, 6-5.

With HSU unable to add to its dwindling lead in the top of the seventh, Arkansas Tech scored an additional four runs for what would be the eventual final score, 9-6. Henderson saw just two more hits in the remaining two innings.

GAME 2: Arkansas Tech 12, Henderson St. 6
Tech claimed two runs in the first inning, met by a single run from the Reddies in the top of the second off an RBI-single from Jacob Carroll. The game was virtually decided, however, in the bottom half of the second. A pair of HSU errors met with four hits fueled an eight-run showing for the home team to build a 10-1 lead.

Henderson added three more runs to Tech's two over the next three innings, but the visitors were never able to get closer than six the rest of the way. The Reddies made it a little interesting in their final at-bat, loading the bases on two outs before Cowart and Luke Farrar were hit by pitch and then walked on back-to-back plate appearances.

With the score brought to 12-6 as the bases remained juiced, two outs gave way to three as a final strikeout gave Tech the day's second contest.
