ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - After a midweek appetizer between these two teams, Henderson State and Arkansas-Monticello will meet for a three-game weekend series at Clyde Berry Field, starting tomorrow at 6 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m with the series finale set for approximately 4 p.m.
REDDIES REPORT (21-14, 12-9 GAC)
Henderson dropped its first midweek game in three weeks after falling to Arkansas-Monticello from Weevils Field this past Tuesday, 13-6. The Reddies had eight different players log a hit as
Luke Farrar (2-for-4) was the only HSU batter to record multiple hits in the outing.Â
Clyde Berry Field has served as a safe haven for Henderson baseball this season. When playing on their home turf, HSU is 15-4 and has not lost a GAC series. When away from their home ballpark, the Reddies are 6-10 and 2-2 in league series'.
Weekend starting pitching has been solid for Henderson through 35 games, with
Ryan Galvan and
Andrew Howard each seeing nine starts on the year, followed by
Reese Weaks with eight. The trio has posted north of 30 strikeouts each while batters are hitting .270 or worse against each hurler. As their closers, the Reddies have found the most consistency from
Henry Coppens and
Cade Tucker, who are both carrying sub 2.25 ERAs with two and five saves, respectively. Â
This weekend will mark the end of one streak or another. Henderson has not lost a conference series this season. Conversely, HSU has not won a series against Arkansas-Monticello since 2013. In the all-time series, Henderson St. is 91-86 against the Boll Weevils.Â
SCOUTING ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO (21-13, 12-9 GAC)
Arkansas-Monticello logged 13 runs on 11 hits in the midweek head-to-head with the Reddies as UAM improved to 9-7 at home. The Boll Weevils actually sport a better record away from home as they are 10-5 outside of Weevils Field, including winners of three of four GAC series'.
As a team, UAM has tallied 72 doubles, nine triples and 41 home runs compared to HSU's 71 doubles, 13 triples and 41 homers. Monticello's top four hitters are all slugging .539 or better, with sophomore outfielder Kirk Woolf leading in that category with a .641 slugging percentage thanks to a team-high 47 hits and eight home runs. Fellow-sophomore Cade Cancilla sits right behind him with 46 hits while leading the way with 35 RBIs.
Arkansas-Monticello has a team-ERA of 6.85 with starting pitchers Mason Philley and Connor Irvine leading the staff with a 3.88 and 5.43 ERA, respectively. Through 55.2 innings of work, Philley leads the GAC with 86 strikeouts and is ninth in opposing batting average against him (.234). The lefty has also been good about not giving up the big hit as he is tied for fourth with just two home runs against him.  Â
