SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Reddie defense held the Bison offense scoreless for 49 minutes and 44 seconds of game time Saturday as No. 24 Henderson State posted its largest margin of victory ever against Oklahoma Baptist away from Carpenter-Haygood Stadium with its 27-14 victory.
After the four all-time meetings in Shawnee between the Reddies and the Bison had been decided by eights points or fewer, Henderson's defense held OKBU to its fewest points at home this season while HSU's offense scored 24 of its 27 points in the first half.
Jeremiah Davis (68) and
Fredrick O'Donald (54) combined for 124 yards of HSU's 184 yards while Henderson held OKBU to 62 yards on the ground. Defensively,
Jakob Neel logged a team-high 10 tackles and one tackle for loss. As a unit, the Reddies recorded four sacks and forced seven punts.
Oklahoma Baptist's (3-2) opening drive went quickly as Henderson (4-1)Â forced a quick three-and-out before it took the Reddies all of four plays to get on the board. Davis, in his first start of the season, cut through the Bison defense for 35 yards on the red-and-gray's first play from scrimmage. Three plays later, Edwards found tight end
Cayden Davis in the back of the endzone for an early 7-0 lead.
A 12-play, 75-yard drive from Oklahoma Baptist tied things up a little over six minutes later, but that was the Bison's last time to add to its score until late in the fourth. Henderson's offense proceeded to score touchdowns on its next two drives to see a 21-7 advantage early in the second quarter.
A
Kolby King field goal with 3:08 remaining in the opening half gave the game its halftime score, 24-7. Defense took over from there as both teams combined for just 10 more points over the next 30 minutes. After there was a total of six punts in the third, King matched his season long with a 38-yard field goal on HSU's first drive of the fourth to put the finishing touches on the outcome.
A Bison touchdown with a minute left in regulation cut the margin to 13, but the No. 24 Reddies left Shawnee with the 27-14 victory nonetheless. Henderson State will return to Arkadelphia to face Southern Nazarene Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m.
