ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - With conference play beginning this upcoming weekend, Henderson State has one more pre-GACÂ warm-up against Union University Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m.Â
REDDIES REPORT (3-4, 0-0 GAC)
Through the season's first seven games, Henderson is operating as one of the best offenses in the GAC with a league-fourth best .321 batting average, including the second most hits of anyone in the conference (77). In the four-game series against Northwest Missouri State, HSU averaged 10.8 hits per game. In three of the Reddies' seven contests in 2024, they have logged double-digit hits.
First baseman
Luke Rice delivered his best game of the young season in the series finale against the Bearcats, recording five hits on six at-bats. Rice is tied for second among league leaders with 11 hits while batting .423. Behind Rice is outfielder
Louis Holt with 10 hits while leading the clubhouse with a .500 hitting average.
Dillon Thomas is the third Reddie who has already posted double-digit hits on the year.
What has Henderson State 3-4 through seven showings is early-season struggles on the mound. Henderson is tenth in the league with a team ERA of 8.38 while having given up 12 or more runs in four contests. Additionally, HSU has issued 10 or more walks in three of the seven outings, including in each of the final two games against Northwest Missouri.
Of the four HSU pitchers who have made at least one start this season,
Ryan Galvan has proven the most useful, holding a 2.70 ERA through 10 innings of work, having allowed just 10 hits and three earned runs.
Kyle Williams out of the bullpen has a team-high 10 strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched while he owns a pitching staff-best 1.23 ERA among pitchers with at least three innings pitched.
Henderson State and Union University will meet Tuesday afternoon for the first time since Union shutout HSU in Jackson, Tennessee, 8-0, back in 2019. The Reddies, who lead the all-time series 9-7, have not lost to the Bulldogs at Clyde Berry Field since 2017.Â
SCOUTING UNION (4-3, 0-0 GSC)
Union comes into the midweek contest riding a four-game winning streak, including sweeping Washburn in a three-game series. The Bulldogs' offense managed to plate at least nine runs in all three contests with the Ichabods while combining for 28 hits in the last two outings.
Conversely, Union pitching has allowed at least eight runs in each of the last three games. Opponents have recorded double-digit hits in five of UU's seven contests this season. As a team, the Bulldogs own a team ERA of 6.83, which is the second worst in the Gulf South Conference.
Union's offense is led by sophomore Grant Ross, who leads the starters with 12 hits and nine RBI while hitting .429. Following Ross is senior infielder Mitch Sisk, who has 10 hits, including two home runs, and is hitting .417. Union is hitting a collective .289, which is sixth in the GSC.
