ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - After winning its GAC-opening series against Southwestern Oklahoma State, Henderson State will take a brief break from conference with a midweek contest against Delta State Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m.
REDDIES REPORT (6-5, 2-1 GAC)
After a 3-4 start to the season, Henderson responded with a big series win against Southwestern Oklahoma, winning two of the three games. It was just the second time in GAC history that HSU has defeated the Bulldogs in a three-game series in Weatherford, Oklahoma. This past weekend also marked the fourth consecutive opening GAC series the Reddies have won.
Henderson's
Louis Holt and
Luke Rice have been on a tear to start the season, hitting .500 and .452, respectively. Holt, who is currently sporting a 10-game hit streak, leads the conference in on-base percentage (.633) with his 17 hits and league-second best 11 walks. Rice is leading the clubhouse with 19 hits, 13 of which came in four games. That is the most hits in a four-game span for an HSU player during the GAC era.
Pitcher
Kyle Williams got his first start of the season in game one of the SWOSU series, earning the win in five innings of work with just four runs allowed on two hits, a pair of strikeouts and three walks. Williams (3.65) joins
Ryan Galvan (3.55) as the two Reddie pitchers with the lowest ERAs among pitchers with at least eight innings pitched.
Henderson State and Delta State have split the last four meetings, with DSU taking the last head-to-head, 5-1 in Cleveland, Mississippi, last season. The Reddies, who have not lost to Delta at Clyde Berry Field since 2019, trail in the overall series against the Statesmen, 64-10.Â
SCOUTING DELTA STATE (5-5, 0-0 GSC)
Delta State enters Tuesday's game 5-5 on the year, but has lost to GAC opponents Harding in a three-game series and fell in a single game to Southern Arkansas, 15-9. This season, DSU is 2-1 away from Harvey Stadium at Ferriss Field.
The Statesmen boats two batters hitting over .400 on the year, led by junior infielder Brett Burrell with a .425 batting average on 17 hits. Fellow junior infielder Brendan McCauley is matching Burrell's 17 hits on top of his .405 average. On the mound, Delta is carrying a team ERA of 6.61.
