Baseball Takes on Union in Road Contest Tuesday

COVERAGE LINKS

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - For the second time this season, Henderson State will face off against Union University, this time in Jackson, Tennessee. First pitch from Union's Fesmire Baseball Field is set for Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m.

REDDIES REPORT (8-7, 4-2 GAC)
Henderson State heads into Tuesday's midweek matchup off its second consecutive GAC series victory to open the 2024 season. After HSU and Northwestern Oklahoma State split the first two games, the Reddies used a bottom-of-the-eighth solo home run from true freshman Jordan Allen to take the series-deciding finale, 4-3.

A career performance from starting pitcher Reese Weaks highlighted the one-run victory as the Princeton, Texas, native recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in six innings of work after allowing just one hit and one run. The Rangers' sole hit came on their second at-bat of the game off a one-out, one-run homer as Weaks went his remaining 5.2 innings without giving up a hit.

Head Coach Cody Hooten moved outfielder Nate Moore into the lead-off position the last two games of the NWOSU series only to have Moore log two hits in each contest. The former Bossier Parrish Community College transfer has been a staple of consistency for the Reddies over the last two weeks, having recorded a hit in 10 straight games. In his three starting appearances in the lead-off position, Moore is hitting .500 (5-for-10).

In the season first meeting with Union at Clyde Berry Field, the Henderson pitching staff held the Bulldogs to just twoo runs on four hits as starting pitcher Andrew Howard and reliever Ethan Perry combined for nine strikeouts. Perry's two-inning outing came with no hits and no runs while issuing just one walk to UU batters as HSU took the midweek matchup, 8-2.

SCOUTING UNION (7-8, 2-4 GSC)
Following its loss to Henderson State, Union responded by winning three of its next four games, including a Gulf South Conference series victory over West Alabama. Most recently, however, UU got swept by Delta State at home. After dropping the first two games by a combined five runs, the Statesmen completed the sweep with a 8-1 victory in the finale.

Through 15 games, Union is 7-4 at Fesmire Baseball Field compared to 0-4 on the road. In the Bulldogs' 11 home games, they have scored fewer than five runs just three times. Fueling that offense is sophomore Grant Ross (23) and senior Mitch Sisk (20), as both players have recorded 20 or more hits on the season. Against HSU two weeks ago, Sisk was responsible for two of Union's four hits while Ross is sporting a seven-game hitting streak.
