ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - With two GAC series victories under its belt, Henderson State will aim for a third when it welcomes Arkansas Tech to Clyde Berry Field for a three-game series this weekend, beginning Friday, Mar. 1 at 6 p.m.
REDDIES REPORT (9-7, 4-2 GAC)
After dropping back-to-back games against Southwestern Oklahoma State and Delta State, Henderson has since won three of its last four contests, including taking two of three against Northwestern Oklahoma State in HSU's GAC home opening series. During that stretch, the Reddies have given up three or fewer runs twice.
The red-and-gray's pitching is starting to come into shape after a slow start to the season. Through 16 games, Henderson's team-ERA is down to 6.40, which is now ninth in the GAC. In conference play, that number drops to 4.59, which is seventh. The Reddies are still pacing the rest of the GAC in walks issued (107), while they are middle of the pack in league competition with 26 walks in six such games.
Reigning GAC Pitcher of the Week
Reese Weaks leads the HSU pitching staff with a team-best 3.32 ERA among pitchers who have made at least two starts this season. After tallying a career-high 10 strikeouts in the rubber match against Northwestern Oklahoma last weekend, the former Western Texas College transfer now has 17 strikeouts on the year, second on the team to
Kyle Williams (18). In conference play, Weaks is seventh in the GAC with 13 strikeouts.
At the plate,
Nate Moore continued his now 11-game hitting streak with a single base knock against Union in the midweek. With a hit in each game of this weekend's series against Arkansas Tech, Moore will tie teammate
Dillon Thomas among several others with the fourth-longest hitting streak in program history at 14.
Kaden Argenbright could be in line for a record-breaking weekend as the senior infielder, who already has seven doubles on the year, needs just three more two-baggers to pass former-teammate
Greyson Stevens for the most career doubles in program history (60).
Henderson State has not lost a three-game home GAC series against Arkansas Tech since 2018 while having won three of the last four games against ATU at Clyde Berry Field. Overall, HSU has not lost a home conference series since Apr. 3, 2021, winning 13 straight GAC series' to date. This season, Henderson is 5-5 when playing at Clyde Berry, while Arkansas Tech is 0-7 in true road games in 2024.
SCOUTING ARKANSAS TECH (8-8, 3-3 GAC)
The Wonder Boys have a .500 record through 16 games despite having playing a tough non-conference schedule that featured then-No. 3 Tampa, No. 9 Southern New Hampshire and a four-game series against then-No. 5 Central Missouri. Following the series with the Mules, Tech was 2-5 before winning six of its next nine. Coming into this weekend, the Wonder Boys are riding a five-game winning streak, including wins over then-(RV) Southern Arkansas and Harding in midweek action.
It has been a tale of two GAC series' for Arkansas Tech. In its conference opener, Tech went to Shawnee, Oklahoma, and got swept by Oklahoma Baptist by a combined score of 19-15. Following that, the Wonder Boys licked their wounds before embarking on this current five-game winning streak, including a series sweep of Southern Nazarene at home by a combined score of 26-5.
Arkansas Tech's overall stats have it batting .263 on the year, which is ninth in the GAC, but when in the six games against conference opponents, Tech is hitting .293 for third in the league. Likewise, pitching for the Wonder Boys against Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene has them with a 3.62 ERA while overall they are carrying a 5.66 ERA.
