ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The Reddie baseball program announced on Wednesday that Clay Berry, the brother of Henderson State chancellor Dr. Trey Berry and son of the late Clyde Berry, is the inaugural winner of the newly established Clyde Berry Award.
Named for the legendary former skipper of the Reddies, the award will be presented annually to a former Reddie baseball player or Henderson State alum who has pursued a career in coaching baseball and has exemplified excellence both on and off the diamond.
Clay Berry, who was a three-time First Team All-AIC selection for the Reddies from 1984 to 1987 and was inducted into the Henderson State Hall of Honor in 2011, has been in coaching since 1990 and has a career head coaching record of 285-162.Â
Berry has been the head baseball coach at five different high school programs in the state of Texas during his career — Sherman (1990-96), Pottsboro (1996-97), Queen City (1997-01), Lufkin (2001-13), and Langham Creek (2013-21). He led Lufkin to the 2009 UIL 5A State Championship game and took Langham Creek to the UIL 6A state semifinals in 2016.
The Clyde Berry Award will be presented to coach Clay Berry on the field prior to first pitch of Saturday's doubleheader at 12 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist.
