Reddies Fall on the Road to Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Henderson State could not overcome inclement weather and a cold offense for the second straight Saturday, falling to Arkansas Tech on the road by a final score of 17-6.

The Reddie defense was opportunistic to begin the game, recovering a fumble near midfield to take prime field position on their first offensive drive. The offense could not capitalize, going three-and-out and punting for the first of three consecutive drives to begin the game.

Those punts were matched by those of the Wonder Boys, as each team punted on three straight possessions in the first and early second quarters.

The first score came from the foot of Ryan McDonnell, who helped the Reddies finish a five-play, 32-yard drive with a 36-yard field goal.

The Wonder Boys marched down the field and answered right back with a 28-yard field goal off the foot of Logan Tymeson. The ensuing Henderson drive was highlighted by a 42-yard run from Jeremiah Davis, but the Reddies could not capitalize, turning the ball over on downs at the Arkansas Tech 30-yard line. Fortunately for HSU, the Wonder Boys could not take advantage of the turnover, going three-and-out for the second time in three second-quarter drives.

The Reddie offense again marched down the field, as Andrew Edwards connected with Cayden Davis on a 23-yard strike to set up first-and-goal from the three-yard line. However, the lone holding penalty of the first half was called on the Reddies, who had to settle for a McDonnell 30-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.

The second half proved difficult for the Reddies, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The teams spent the third quarter trading punts until the Wonder Boys scored the first touchdown by either team when Carter Hensley connected with Jared Long for a 10-yard score to give Tech its first lead of the game, a lead they would not relinquish. HSU's subsequent drive led to a 41-yard field goal attempt from McDonnell; the try was tipped and missed wide to the left.

ATU took advantage of the momentum, taking 5:05 to go 76 yards before Bryson Roland ran for a 20-yard touchdown to set the final score. Henderson State managed just 305 yards of total offense, although they outgained Arkansas Tech in yards, offensive plays, and first downs.

Edwards finished 17-of-32 passing for 110 yards. Jeremiah Davis led the rushing attack with 84 yards on 10 attempts, while Cayden Davis was the leading receiver, gaining 40 yards on three catches.

Henderson State returns to the road next week in Durant, Oklahoma; the kickoff against Southeastern Oklahoma State is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
