Reddies Start Hot, Hold On Late to Improve to 2-0

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Henderson State Reddies got off to a fast start Saturday, overcame costly penalties, won the battle of turnovers, and rode three first half touchdowns to a win, defeating Oklahoma Baptist by a score of 28-14.

After defending a Bison possession and forcing a punt, the Reddies started their opening drive from their own 10-yard line. An incomplete pass started the drive, but Andrew Edwards only needed one more play, connected with Maddox Davis for a 90 yard touchdown. The Benton native hauled in his first career touchdown to cap off a two play drive that took just 17 seconds off the clock.

The second possession for the Reddie defense was a mirror image of the first, as they allowed a run for a first down on the opening play, but then forced another Bison punt. The ensuing Reddie possession took a bit more time, but with a similar result: an Edwards touchdown pass, this time a 23 yard strike to Aundreus Griffin. All but six yards of the 70 on the drive came through the air, with the Griffin touchdown pass and a 41 reception by Cayden Davis the highlights of the drive. The Reddies were up 14-0 just over six minutes into the game.

The next offensive possession began a string of scoreless possessions for the Reddies, but the defense held strong and kept the Bison off the board for their first six possessions of the ballgame. All three levels of the Reddie defense were successful in the first half: Paul Manning intercepted a pass that killed Oklahoma Baptist's best drive of the half, while Yossif Gamel, Jordan Owens, and Gerard Culotta combined for two total sacks.

The lone Bison score of the first half came from an impressive drive in the waning moments of the second quarter; a 12 play, 75 yard drive resulted in a TJ McMahon touchdown pass to Haydn Thornton. McMahon, the backup quarterback, came into the game replacing starter Chad Mascoe II to begin the second quarter.

A long drive to open the third quarter proved unfruitful for the Reddies, as the offense only managed 19 yards on 12 plays in just over five minutes. The defense again managed to keep the Bison on their own side of the field before forcing yet another punt.

Henderson's offense had their best drive of the night toward the end of the third quarter. The run game was strong early, but good plays were negated throughout the game, with 17 penalties costing the Reddies 165 yards on the night.

The teams traded turnovers to open the final period of action, with Markavious Justice intercepting a Bison pass, immediately followed by an Edwards lost fumble on a run play to open the HSU drive. The Bison were the first to strike in the final period, taking just over a minute before a touchdown pass capped a six play, 37 yard drive for the final score of the game.

The Reddies compiled over 600 yards of offense in the win; Edwards was 21 of 37 for 375 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, and ran for 41 yards on nine carries with a touchdown. Maddox Davis was the breakout star of the game, hauling in 220 yards on eight receptions, including the 94 yard reception on just the second offensive play of the game. Senior tight end Cayden Davis had his second consecutive solid game, hauling in six catches for 101 yards.

The Reddie running back committee had a solid night as well, with 163 yards on the ground. Jeremiah Davis led the backs with 81 yards on thirteen carries with a touchdown. Dylan Jones gained 55 yards on eight attempts.

Gerard Culotta led the Reddie defense with seven tackles, including a tackle for loss. De'Vonta Roberts and Gamel each finished with four tackles. Mulumba Wa-Kalonji registered his first tackle for loss in a Henderson State uniform with a ten yard sack in the second half. Markavious Justice, Kolbi Crawford, and Bryant Hammond II each intercepted a Bison pass in the second half to join Manning's first half takeaway.

The Reddies are back on the road next Saturday, September 20 as they head to Monticello to take on UAM.
