Reddies Win on the Road Again, Defeat UAM 48-18

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Henderson State used another quick start and a balanced offense to win its third consecutive game on the road Saturday night, taking care of Arkansas-Monticello by a final score of 48-18.

After the teams traded quick opening drives, the Reddie defense made the first big play, as Paul Manning recorded a strip sack of UAM quarterback Tavion Faulk and Taylor Hughey recovered the fumble to set HSU up in prime scoring position. It took just two plays before the Reddies struck, with Jeremiah Davis taking a handoff into the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown.

Following another forced UAM punt, Henderson's offense put on a masterclass, driving 84 yards on a 12-play drive marked by an Andrew Edwards seven-yard touchdown run. Edwards also had a 44-yard pass to Aundreus Griffin to convert on a fourth down and long and keep the drive alive.

Another three-and-out for the Reddie defense befell the Weevils, highlighted by a 10-yard sack of Faulk, this time by Braxton Nixon-Snell. The ensuing punt put HSU in Weevil territory, and the Reddie offense utilized the ground game for five of the six offensive plays. The drive ended in a 26-yard field goal by Ryan McDonnell.

The UAM offense failed to gain momentum, going just 19 yards in five plays before punting the ball back to Henderson. The Reddies' next drive got off to a rough start, with two consecutive negative plays; Edwards quickly turned the drive around, though, with back-to-back big completions: one to Micah Greene (29 yards) and the other to Trent Haygood (40 yards). That set up the next Reddie score, as Maddox Davis pulled in his fourth catch of the half, a 28-yard reception for the third Henderson touchdown of the half.

Arkansas-Monticello had its best drive of the first half during the two-minute drill, driving 41 yards in seven plays, but two incomplete passes forced the Weevils to settle for a 36-yard field goal. The Reddies' last drive came up just short of field goal range, and Axel Robertson came on for just his second punt of the half. He made his presence felt, pinning UAM at the one-yard line with just two seconds remaining before halftime.

The Reddies' first offensive drive showed promise early, highlighted by a 23-yard run by Dylan Jones, but then HSU committed its first turnover of the game: Edwards threw an interception to stop the momentum temporarily, but the defense stood firm once again, ceding just one yard to the UAM offense before another punt. The two teams exchanged drives before UAM scored its first touchdown of the game, a Faulk completion to Ahmari Cox for a 29-yard score.

Henderson's offense responded quickly, needing only 3:30 to go 73 yards in eight plays; Cayden Davis caught his first touchdown pass of the season, a four-yard strike from Edwards, to give the Reddies a three-score lead again.

The two teams traded punts to conclude the third quarter of play, but the Reddies didn't wait long to score again, and they did it in style; Edwards was on the receiving end of some trickery, catching a touchdown pass thrown by Micah Greene to cap a three-play, 57-yard drive.
The defense fed off the momentum and caused problems for UAM again, as Lanard Harris intercepted Faulk for his first takeaway of the season. McDonnell returned and connected for three points, this time from 40 yards out. Chris Gannaway got in on the big play half on the next drive, scampering 45 yards for a touchdown to set the final score.

Edwards finished 19-of-28 on the game, throwing for 243 yards and two touchdowns; the redshirt senior also led the team in the ground game, running the ball nine times for 75 yards and a rushing touchdown to go along with 36 yards receiving to accompany the touchdown reception. Gannaway and Jeremiah Davis carried the ball on the other two rushing scores.

Trent Haygood was the leading receiver for the Reddies with 83 yards on five catches. Cayden Davis also had five catches for Henderson for 27 yards to accompany the touchdown. Maddox Davis caught four passes for 33 yards and a score.

No Reddie defensive player had more than four tackles credited to them, but 21 different players registered a tackle in the game. The defense was led by the secondary, with Paul Manning forcing one of two UAM fumbles on the day; the team accounted for eight tackles for loss, including three sacks.

Henderson State returns home for the first time since the season opener on Saturday, September 27th for Family Day; the Reddies welcome Southern Arkansas to Carpenter-Haygood Stadium and Ruggles Field.
