Reddies in Fourth After One Round at GAC Championship

TULSA, Okla. – Henderson State started the quest for its sixth consecutive GAC Championship on Monday at Page Belcher Golf Course in Tulsa, and sits well within contention after 18 holes of play. The Reddies sit in fourth place, just seven strokes off the lead.

Arkansas Tech leads after one round of play at 17-over par; Northwestern Oklahoma State sits alone in second, five shots behind the Golden Suns. Southwestern Oklahoma State ended the day at 23-over, one stroke ahead of the Reddies. Oklahoma Baptist is the only other school within 10 shots of the lead.

First Team All-GAC member Lily Nelson led the way for HSU on Monday, shooting a four-over 75. The defending GAC Golfer of the Week shot even par on the back nine after a 39 on the par-35 front nine, marked by two bogeys in her opening two holes. Nelson ranks sixth in the individual standings.

Hailey Coleman used five birdies in her opening round to finish with a six-over 77, good enough for 12th place. Coleman made her move at the turn with a string of three birdies in four holes to wipe out two double bogeys on holes five and six.

GAC Elite Scholar Athlete Isabella Ferreira and Second Team All-GAC member Paulina Narvaez sit just one stroke behind Coleman after the pair each shot a seven-over 78, sitting in a tie for 19th place. Narvaez started hot, with two birdies in her first three holes; all three of her birdies were on the front nine. Ferreira did not manage to make a birdie in her round, but was steady with a string of pars down the stretch.

Lora Jones finished out the scoring for Henderson with a 10-over. The freshman finished strong, though, with a birdie on the par-four 18th and is 33rd going into round two.

Tuesday's second round features slightly earlier tee times, as Jones will be the first to tee off at 9:40 a.m. Ferreira follows at 9:50, with Narvaez starting at 10:00. Coleman (10:10) and Nelson (10:20) will finish up for the Reddies.
