Henderson State committed seven turnovers and managed just 210 yards of offense as the Reddies lost to Division I South Alabama 28-3, Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.
The Reddies, 4-4 on the season, continued to have troubles with turnovers as Henderson State has committed 17 turnovers over the last three games.
South Alabama, 5-3 on the year, scored the first 10 points of the game off of
Reddie turnovers as Nathan Nall was intercepted by Enrqe Williams at the Henderson 25.
The Jags moved the ball down to the Reddie 2-yardline to set up first-and-goal, but the Henderson defense held and forced Jordan Means to kick a 18-yard field goal for the early 3-0 lead.
Following the kickoff, Jarvis Smith fumbled to give USA the ball on the HSU 23. Two plays later, Demetre Baker ran in from 7-yards out to make the score 10-0 with 8:42 to play in the opening quarter.
USA got the ball back on the Reddie 29 after Henderson failed to convert on 4th-and-1 on a fake punt.
Baker later scored from a yard out, but the USA 2-point conversion failed and the score stood at 16-0 with 1:57 left in the quarter.
After another three-and-out by the Reddies, Jereme Jones broke free for a 65-yard run to set up USA's next score. Means added another 18-yard field goal to increase the Jags' lead to 19-0.
South Alabama added a 9-yard touchdown by C.J. Bennett and a 45-yard field-goal by Means by the end of the half, as the Jaguars took a 28-0 lead at the break.
Henderson State had a chance to get on the board on its first possession of the second-half as the Reddies moved the ball down to the South Alabama 4 with the help of a 14-yard pass from Kevin Rodgers to Dustin Holland, and a 19-yard reception by Elliot Hebert. However, Rodgers was picked off by Anthony Taylor to end the drive.
The only score of the second came when Eric Torres put the Reddies on the board at the end of the third-quarter with a 30-yard field goal.
Nall started the game for the Reddies at quarterback and completed 4-of-11 passes for 37 yards. Rodgers entered the game late in the second quarter and completed 14-of-30 passes for 118 yards and was picked off three times.
Kevin Nichols led the Reddie running backs with 32 yards, while Smith was limited to 22 yards.
Hebert had three catches for 35 yards, while Holland caught three passes for
28 yards.
South Alabama totaled 375 yards of offense with Baker rushing for 111 yards on 20 carries.
Henderson was led defensively by Keaton Stigger who had 10 tackles, a forced fumble and two pass breakups. Benny Anderson followed with eight tackles.
Henderson State will play its final home game of the season next Saturday as the Reddies play host to McKendree with the kickoff slated for 1 p.m. at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium.
