After losing to Delta State University on a last-second shot a week ago to the day, the Henderson State men's basketball team traveled to Cleveland, Miss. on Monday night with thoughts on avenging the heart-breaking loss, but the Reddies' (1-2) suffered a similar finish as they lost to DSU on a made 3-pointer with time expiring to give the Statesmen (4-2) the 58-57 win.
The game between the former Gulf South Conference rivals was a back and forth contest with three tie scores and the lead changing hands five times. In the waning minutes of the game, the Reddies held a slight advantage. The final tie of the game came at 53-all with just over two minutes remaining.
Henderson jumped ahead, 54-53, with 1:08 remaining after Josh French made good on the second of his two free throw attempts. The Reddies were able to extend their lead to three points after a transition layup by Jonathan Fitzgerald was made following a blocked shot by HSU's Andrew Ensley on the other end of the court.
With 12 seconds remaining, the Statesmen pulled to within a point, 56-55, after they made a layup of their own on their next possession. With no other options, the Statesmen fouled HSU's Ensley on the ensuing in-bounds play. To that point in the game, Ensley was 3-of-6 from the free throw line, and had the opportunity to put the Reddies ahead by three points.
The junior transfer missed his first attempt, but was good on the second attempt, and the Reddies led 57-55 with only nine seconds left in regulation.
A called timeout by Delta State set up the dramatic final play of the game. With the time expiring, DSU's Aaron Cooper dished the ball to Terry Leake, who drained the trifecta that gave the Statesmen another final-second win over the Reddies. The first one came a week ago to the day, and in painful irony, it was Cooper who was the shooting hero for Delta in that game which was held at the Duke Wells Center.
One of the keys to the game was the two team's efficiency at the charity stripe. For the game, the Statesmen were 16-of-19 (84 percent) from the line. On the other side, the Reddies were just 13-of-23 (57 percent) from the line, and missed two of their final four free throws.
Ensley, Fitzgerald, and French all scored in double figures for the Reddies. Ensley led the team with 13 points, French had 12 points, and Fitzgerald ended with 10 points.
