Henderson State rallied from a late second-half 7-point deficit to beat Arkansas-Fort Smith, 65-64, Friday in Fort Smith, Ark.
The Reddies, 2-2 on the year, trailed 55-48 with under 8 minutes remaining. Henderson began cutting into the deficit with the help of Denzel Lyles' free throws and a big 3-point basket to make the score 59-58 with 3:10 remaining.
Henderson took the lead after a Dee Johnson steal resulted in a layup by Andrew Ensley to make the score 60-59 with 2:30 left to play.
After losing its last two games on buzzer-beaters, the Reddies went on to convert on 5 of 6 free throws to hold off UAFS for the win.
The biggest of the free throws came with 11 seconds remaining as Lester Johnson gave the Reddies a four-point cushion, making both free throws to secure the victory.
Ensley led the Reddies with 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Lyles added 13. Dee Johnson also scored in double figures having 11 points.
Both teams struggled from the field with the Reddies making just 20-of-57 shots for 35 percent, while UAFS was just 16-of-45 for 36 percent.
