Freed-Hardeman scored their final nine points of the game against Henderson State on Monday night at the Duke Wells Center by making 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute of the game as they slipped past HSU by that margin, 81-72.
The turning point in the closely-contested game came with 1:03 remaining in regulation as HSU's Andrew Ensley committed a personal foul sending the Lions to the line, shooting in the single bonus. Added damage followed in the aftermath as Jonathan Fitzgerald was whistled for a technical foul giving Freed-Hardeman two extra foul shots before the one-and-one attempt from Ensley's foul.
For the three minutes of game time prior, the Reddies (3-3) trailed the visiting Lions by six points, 72-66.
Already going to the line on the foul, Freed-Hardeman's Jonathan Milewski took the preceding technical fouls shots. Milewski made good on the technical free throws and was also good on both shots on the one-and-one extending their lead to 10 points, 76-66.
With a little over a minute remaining in the game, the Lions would make five of their next six free throws to close out the game as the Reddies were forced to foul quickly on each Lion possession.
For much of the game the two teams traded blows as each team held several leads throughout, but the deficit by either team was no more than nine points until the final minute when Free-Hardeman succeeded in the pivotal and late four-point turnaround.
Ensley did lead the team in scoring for the fourth time in the team's first six games as he netted 14 points on 7-of-14 (50 percent) shooting. Dee Johnson, Denzel Lyles, and Donovan Walker each added 12 points. Lyles and Walker, who were the only Reddies to take a free throw shot, went a combined 10-for-12 from the free throw line for the game.
The Reddies were out-rebounded 43-33, but the team did win the turnover battle as they forced 20 Lion turnovers and only committed eight of their own.
