Tucker Coliseum saw the top two teams in the Great American Conference in action on Saturday evening as No. 20 Arkansas Tech University played host to visiting Henderson State University. The two teams entered play tied at the top of the GAC standings, but after a 91-67 win, Arkansas Tech ended the evening in sole possession of first place.
Early on both teams played like the top two teams in the league as they traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of game time. In that stretch neither team led by more than four points and there were six tie scores and four lead changes. Ahead 20-19 with 8:41 left in the half, ATU went on a 7-0 run to take control of the game. The Wonder Boys (19-4, 11-2 GAC) would lead by as much as nine points before taking a three-point lead into the break, 38-35.
Through the first five minutes of the second half, the Reddies (15-8, 10-3 GAC) stayed close getting to within two points, 44-42. Tech, however, flexed their shooting muscle and began to pull away from Henderson midway through the second half as they extended their lead to over 20 points. The Wonder Boys, on the strength of 57 percent shooting (16-of-28) in the second half alone, maintained that margin for the remainder of the game.
Senior forward Josh French was the lone Reddie to score in double figures with 13 points, but six others contributed at least seven points to the Reddies' total. French also led the team with 11 rebounds for a double-double effort.
The Reddies return home on Monday, February 20th as they will play host to in-town rival Ouachita Baptist University for the second installment of the Men's Basketball Battle of the Ravine. Tip-off for the duel is set for 7:30 p.m.
