Michael Corso's two-run home run, coupled with
Brittain Diamond's masterful pitching performance led Henderson State to a 7-1 win over Arkansas-Monticello, Sunday at Clyde Berry Field.
After dropping a double-header to the Boll Weevils on Saturday, the Reddies needed a solid pitching performance and that is what they got from Diamond.
Things didn't look good to begin the game as Diamond hit the leader off batter of the game in Taylor Eaves. Eaves later scored on a Danny Loya single, but it was the only run that Diamond would surrender the entire afternoon..
The senior from Sulphur Springs, Texas proceeded to strike out 10 batters and scatter just four hits to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Boll Weevils, 13-14 overall and 3-8 in the Great American Conference, mounted a threat in the fourth-inning loading the bases, but with the help of some solid defense by the Reddies Diamond worked out of the jam. The right-hander then struck-out the side in the fifth and the Reddies gave him plenty of run support in the later innings.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Corso gave the Reddies all the runs they would need with a two-run blast over the scoreboard in right field.
Henderson State (14-13 and 5-7) added two more runs in the sixth-inning as
Dustin Hudson led off the inning with a single, followed by a double by Corso. Hudson then scored on a wild pitch with Corso coming home on a
Michael Schell single to make the score 4-1.
The Reddies then put the game away in the eighth-inning by scoring three runs including run scoring singles by
Mitch Frey and
Taylor Coleman.
Corso ended the day going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, with Coleman also having two hits for the Reddies.
The Reddies will begin a five-game road trip starting with a double-header at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Tuesday, and then a three-game GAC series in Searcy, Ark. against Harding beginning Saturday.
