Henderson State's
Reggie Murphy saved his best for the end as he scored six of his eight points in overtime to lead the Reddies to a 93-87 overtime win over Rogers State, Friday at the Arkansas-Fort Smith Classic.
Henderson State, 3-0 on the season, built a 15 point lead early in the second half, but the Hillcats rallied to tie the score at 77-77 with 3:17 left in regulation before taking a lead with a minute left on a layup by Cory Ayala.
Aaron Harwell forced overtime as the Reddie guard hit a jumper with less than four seconds left.
Henderson State scored the first five points in the overtime period as
Melvin Haynes began things with a layup, followed by a bucket and free throw by Murphy to put the Reddies on top 84-79 with 2:54 remaining.
After RSU cut the deficit to three, Murphy hit another layup and free throw with Harwell sinking a pair of free throws to push the Henderson lead to 89-81 with 52 seconds remaining.
The Hillcats, 1-2 on the season, attempted to make a last run but free throws by Haynes, Harwell and
Deoirvay Johnson down the stretch secured the win.
The Reddies limited Rogers State to 25 percent shooting in the overtime period, while Henderson State was 3-of-6 from the field and 8-of-13 from the foul line in the extra period.
Henderson State was led in scoring by Haynes' 24 points, while Harwell and
Taylor Smith added 15 point each with Johnson having 12.
Damien Hooks led the Hillcats with a game-high 29 points and registered a double-double having 12 rebounds.
HSU shot 57 percent from the field (34-of-60) and made just four 3-pointers, while RSU hit on 43 percent (27-of-63) shooting.
Rogers State out rebounded the Reddies 38-33. Murphy led Henderson State in rebounding with 9 boards.
The Reddies will face host Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday with tipoff set for 2:30 p.m.
