Charles Wesley scored a career-high 22 points to lead Henderson State to a 91-88 overtime win over Harding, Monday at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Henderson State, 11-13 overall and 7-9 in the Great American Conference, built a 74-56 lead with 4:41 left in regulation, but a furious rally by Harding forced an extra period.
The Bisons, 12-10 overall and 9-7 in the GAC, finished the half on a 24-6 run with the help of five 3-point field goals including a 28-foot bank shot at the buzzer by John Hudson.
In the first half, Henderson State committed just two turnovers, but the Reddies had troubles inbounding the basketball in the final three minutes of regulation committing four key miscues.
In the extra period, the Reddies made 7-of-10 free throws with Wesley converting on 5-of-6 attempts.
Melvin Haynes, who had just 3 points in regulation, scored two key field goals in overtime.
Henderson's defense forced Harding to take low percentage shots in the extra 5-minutes as the Bisons managed just 2-for-8 from the floor in overtime and were forced to foul and make the Reddies win the game at the charity stripe.
Reggie Murphy opened the game scoring eight of Henderson's first 10 points to give the Reddies a two-point lead.
Henderson then went on a 7-0 run with the help of a 3-point field goal by Brian Umoru.
The Reddies built a 34-20 lead at the 5:01 mark behind the efforts of
Taylor Smith going 6-for-6 at the foul line and a pair of 3-point field goals by
Deoirvay Johnson.
Harding cut the deficit to 34-27 at the 3:09 mark after a pair of Will Francis free throws.
Wesley, who had a career-high 11 points in the first game, surpassed that mark in the first half having 12 points including a 30-footer at the buzzer as time expired to put Henderson on top 42-32 at the break.
Henderson continued its hot shooting to begin the second half as the Reddies held a double-digit lead for most of the half before the Bisons started their comeback.
Along with Wesley's big night, Kozan scored 14 points while converting on 6-of-8 free throws.
Umoru had a career-best 11 points along with a game-high 8 rebounds.
Murphy finished the game with 10 points with Johnson scoring 9 points to go along with 5 rebounds.
Harding had five players finish in double-figures with Hayden Johnson having 21 points and Francis scoring 15.
Henderson State finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field, making 27-of-53 shots. Harding converted on 28-of-64 attempts for 44 percent shooting.
Harding, the top 3-point shooting team in the GAC, was successful on 15-of-36 attempts from beyond the arc including nine treys in the second half.
The Reddies will next play host to Southwestern Oklahoma on Thursday with tip off set for 7:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
