The Henderson State Reddies attempted to duplicate what the Lady Reddies accomplished earlier in the evening, but unlike the women's game, it was the Southwestern Oklahoma that came out on top defeating the Reddies 79-74 in double-overtime.
It was Henderson's second overtime game of the week as the Reddies won on Monday night against Harding.
Southwestern Oklahoma, 15-8 overall and 12-5 in the Great American Conference, got a 20-point, 13 rebound performance from Gary Inglett with Rod Camphor adding 19 points.
Henderson State had a 30-27 lead at halftime as
Deoirvay Johnson scored 9 points while
Taylor Smith totaled 8 points to pace the Reddies.
The Bulldogs could manage just 33 percent shooting from the field in the half, while Henderson State benefitted from the foul line making 8-of-9 attempts.
In the second half, Henderson State took a 51-42 lead with 12:06 to play after 3-point field goals by
Melvin Haynes and Johnson.
SWOSU answered going on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 53-53 with 7:21 remaining in regulation.
Henderson State, 11-14 overall and 7-10 in the GAC, took a 62-60 lead with 44 seconds remaining following a
Reggie Murphy dunk and a free throw by Johnson.
The lead was short-lived as Inglett tied the game with two free throws with 30-seconds left on the clock.
On Henderson's last chance to win in regulation,
Ryan Yeates's short jumper rattled around the rim and out. Murphy muscled his way for the rebound but could not get his layup to fall.
In the first overtime stanza, both teams struggled shooting the ball as SWOSU converted on just 1-of-6 attempts while the Reddies were true on 2-of-7 tries with
Charles Wesley tying the game at 66-66 with a driving layup to send the game into a second overtime.
Murphy put the Reddies on top 68-67 in the second overtime period, but SWOSU went on a 9-0 run that included three free throws from Michael Bradley, and a big 3-pointer from Kenyan Borders to give the Bulldogs a 76-68 lead with 1:16 to play.
The Reddies continued to fight, forcing two Bulldog turnovers which allowed Henderson to get within two points following a pair of free throws by Taylor, and layups by Johnson and Taylor to make the score 76-74 with 33 seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs, however, converted on 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
Five Reddies scored in double-figures led by Taylor's 21 points and 8 rebounds.
Murphy totaled 16 points and 8 boards, while Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.
Also scoring in double-figures were Wesley and Haynes totaling 10 points each.
Henderson State will play its final home game of the season when the Reddies play host to Northwestern Oklahoma with tip-off set for 4 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
A special ceremony recognizing Reddie seniors Aaron Harwell,
Deoirvay Johnson and
Melvin Haynes will take place prior to the game.
