Box Score In a hard fought and defensive Great American Conference battle, the Henderson State men's basketball team fell 79-69 to Southern Arkansas on Saturday afternoon in Magnolia, Ark.
Nine first half points from
Rashad Perkins and seven from
Kevin Kozan kept Henderson State within striking distance, as SAU carried a 32-26 lead into the break.
Henderson State shot 41 percent from the field on 23-of-56 attempts, while SAU shot 48 percent on 22-of-46 attempts.
Late in the second half, SAU used a 12-0 run starting at the 4:58 mark to extend the lead from 59-57 to 71-57, as the Muleriders' Chauncy Williams nailed back-to-back 3-point baskets.
HSU would get no closer as the Muleriders maintained a 10-to-15 point cushion for the remainder of the game.
Perkins led Henderson State in scoring with 20 points on 7-of-10 field goal attempts. The junior from Starkville, Miss. also knocked down 6-of-8 free-throw attempts and hauled in 5 rebounds.
Kevin Kozan scored 14 points on 6-of-14 attempts and had 3 assists, while
Micah Walker pitched in 11 points and 5 rebounds.
SAU made 27-of-39 attempts from the free-throw line, while HSU made 17-of-27 attempts.
The Reddies edged out the Muleriders in the rebounding category, grabbing 36 to SAU's 35. Henderson would also have 16 assists to SAU's 11.
Henderson State will next travel to Bethany, Okla. on Thursday for another conference matchup against Southern Nazarene, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
