THE GAME

Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State (1901), Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State (1904), Alabama vs. Auburn (1893) ...These are just a few of the premiere in-state rivalries that have made major college football great and what it is today.

While these in-state rivalries are exciting and bring a loyal and passionate following from their fans, which also divides the states and many of the families within those states, they do not compare to the country's most unique rivalry of two NCAA Division II schools in Southwest Arkansas.

The Battle of the Ravine represents the quintessential small college football game and atmosphere. What makes this rivalry so unique and better than the ones mentioned previous is that both teams, literally walk across a street when they play on the "road" against the other. The road trip for both teams is the SHORTEST in ALL of College Football.

After 88 games played between these two fine institutions, HSU leads the series 42-40-6. The visiting team has won three of the last four meetings. Henderson had a four game winning streak snapped last year as the Tigers beat the Reddies 41-20.

The first game played between the two institutions was in 1895 when then Ouachita College beat Arkadelphia Methodist College, 8-0 on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.

The second meeting did not occur until 1907 in the first sanctioned game of the series. The Reddies beat the Tigers and went on to claim the Arkansas State Championship. The game was traditionally played on Thanksgiving.

The series discontinued in 1951 after Henderson won 54-0 and the pranks that went along with the series got out of control. The series did not resume until 1963 with the Reddies winning 28-13.

The series continued uninterrupted until 1993 because of HSU's move to the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference. After a three-year hiatus, the series began again in 1996 as OBU moved to the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference.

Ouachita joined the GSC in 2000 and an eight-year GSC schedule had already been put into place. GSC schools did not play everyone in the league due to the number of teams. Henderson and OBU did not play in 2004 or 2005 because the two institutions rotated off each other's conference schedules.

In 2011, both team joined together to form the Great American Conference. Since the inception of the league, the GAC football title has remained in Arkadelphia with OBU claiming the championship in 2011 and 2014, and HSU taking the crown in 2012, 2013, and this season.

Henderson clinched its third Great American Conference championship in four years with a 22-14 victory over Oklahoma Baptist last weekend.

The win improved Henderson's win streak to eight games and moved the Reddies up a spot in the AFCA Top 25 poll to No. 8.

Henderson's offense averages just 373.7 yards per contest which ranks 10th in the GAC.

Dallas Hardison completed 12-of-20 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns last week against OKBU. The junior from Bentonville has completed 170-of-277 passes for 1876 yards for a 61.4 percentage. Hardison's passing yardage this season ranks eighth in HSU history.

Jaquan Cole leads the Reddie ground game having totaled 883 yards on 148 carries.

Running back Rodney Bryson rushed for 99 yards on 25 attempts last week against the Bison and has increased his numbers this season to 324 yards on 77 attempts.

JaVante Mack had three receptions for 49 yards including touchdown receptions of 16 and 22 yards last week. Mack continues to be Henderson's top receiver with 41 receptions for 451 yards.

Mark Czaus follows with 267 yards on 29 receptions. Last week the senior from Garland, Texas caught three passes for 46 yards.

It has been the Reddie defense that has been a major factor in Henderson's GAC Championship run. The Reddies have limited opponents to a GAC best 308.5 yards of offense and 14.4 points per game.

Henderson's defensive unit has recorded 60 tackles for lost yardage, while having a NCAA Division II leading 24 interceptions.

Josh Davis and Lawson Schulz lead the Reddie defense with Davis having 78 tackles along with a team-best 10.0 tackles for lost yardage.
Schulz has totaled 76 tackles with 8.5 tackles for lost yardage as well as six pass breakups and five quarterback hurries.

Ouachita Baptist enters the contest with a 7-3 record following a 58-7 win at Southern Nazarene last week. OBU has won 10 straight conference games at Cliff Harris Stadium.

OBU averages 420.1 yards of offense per game which ranks sixth in the GAC. The Tigers are third in rushing, averaging 263.5 yards per contest.

Austin Warford is OBU's quarterback and has completed 111 of 204 passes for 1524 yards this season. The sophomore from Malvern, Ark. also can run the football ranking sixth in the GAC averaging 72.1 yards per game.

Kris Oliver is the premier running back for the Tigers. The freshman from Arkadelphia has totaled a league-best 1087 yards this season and has scored 18 touchdowns.

He was named GAC Offensive Player of the Week two weeks ago after totaling 277 all-purpose yards against Oklahoma Baptist. Oliver scored four rushing touchdowns and totaled 193 yards rushing last week against Southern Nazarene.

Ke'Vontae Pope is OBU's top receiver as well as one of the best return specialist in the league. The junior from Blytheville, Ark. averages 111.4 all-purpose yard per game which includes 471 yards receiving.

The Tiger defense allows an average of 26.2 points per game with the opposition averaging 396.5 yards of offense per game.

Defensive back Alex Myers leads the Tigers in total tackles with 60 stops including 3.5 tackles for lost yardage.

Linebacker Jahlon Mitchell has 46 tackles on the year including a team-best 5.5 stop for lost yardage.
