Henderson State will play its final home Great American Conference series of the year as the Reddies play host to Southern Nazarene in a three-game set beginning at Clyde Berry Field with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
The Reddies, 20-14 overall and 12-8 in the GAC, could conceivably clinch a spot in the GAC Tournament this weekend. The top six teams advance to the post season tournament in Enid, Okla. beginning May 2. Henderson State is just percentage points out of second-place in the current standings.
Henderson State will attempt to get back to their winning ways as the Reddies have lost five of their last seven games.
Inclement weather has forced Henderson to move a couple of home conference series' with the Reddies having to play East Central in Ada, Okla. and Arkansas-Monticello in Fayetteville earlier this year instead of the friendly confines of Clyde Berry Field.
The Reddie offense has a team average of .287 but lately have not been able to come up with timely hit as Henderson has left an average of nine runners on base in the last 10 games.
Claude Johnson continues to lead the Reddies offensively with a .352 average which includes seven home runs which ranks fourth in the GAC.
Johnson is hitting .378 against GAC opponents and has a .424 average in the last 10 games including four home runs.
Jordan Taylor is hitting for a .500 average in the last five games and .424 in the last 10 games. Taylor is second on the team offensively with a .350 average and currently has an 11 game hitting streak.
The Henderson State pitching staff is second in the league in team ERA at 3.76.
Colton Lorance will be attempting to pick up his third win of the season on Friday. The left-hander has a 3.83 earned run average in nine starts this year.
Cody Jones and
Chris Hunt will pitch Saturday's double-header. Jones leads the team with a 5-2 record which includes a 3.48 ERA, while Hunt is 3-2 with a 3.19 ERA.
Nick Vanthillo has seven saves this season to go along with a 4-0 record. The junior from Brasschatt, Belgium needs one more save to tie Josh Wesson for second in saves for a season.
Jordan Wright holds the HSU single-season record with 10.
Southern Nazarene enters with an 8-20 record overall and a 6-15 mark in league play. The Crimson Storm, however, has won three of their last four games including winning two of three games last weekend from East Central.
Dalen Edgar leads a SNU offense that is hitting .270 as a unit. Edgar is hitting .316, while Anthony Wiggons is hitting .310 which includes a team best 16 runs batted in.
The Crimson Storm ranks last in the league in pitching with a 7.32 ERA. Mason Pinion (2-5, 5.66 ERA), Wiggons (2-4, 8.77), and Jacob Spruill (1-5, 6.18) will make up the SNU rotation.
The two teams will finish the series with a double-header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
