Colton Lorance as the Reddies upset top-ranked St. Cloud State 10-4, Friday at the NCAA Central Regional in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Reddies, making their first-ever NCAA Region appearance, will now play the loser of the Emporia State/Southern Arkansas game at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Henderson State, 28-19 on the season, struck for two quick runs in the first-inning as the Reddies put together three hits including a leadoff single by
Hunter Mayall.
Claude Johnson would then double to left field to advance Mayall to third with no outs.
Jordan Taylor would plate Mayall when he grounded out to second, followed by a single by
Lance Fields that scored Johnson.
St. Cloud State, 51-4 on the year, would score an unearned run in the first and would get a sacrifice fly by Zach Hoffman in the second to tie the score at 2-2.
The score would remain tied until the top of the fifth when the Reddies put together a two-out rally.
Carlos Rodriguez would reach on a SCSU fielding error followed by Mayall being hit by a pitch.
Johnson would deliver the big blow, a three-run home run to left field to make the score 5-2. It was Johnson's team-leading 10th home run of the season.
Meanwhile, the Reddies were getting a great pitching performance from their left-hander Lorance.
The senior from Texarkana, Texas settled down after giving up a pair of runs early and went 7-plus innings, allowing just one earned run.
Lorance surrendered three hits and struck out five batters to improve to 6-4 on the year.
Henderson's offense, facing first-team All-Region pitcher Shelden Miks, gave the left-hander fits all afternoon with the Reddies striking for five runs in the eighth-inning.
Fields would get things started in the inning with a one-out triple.
Andrew Reynolds would reach on a fielder's choice and would advance to second as Taylor was caught in a run-down between third and home.
SCSU third base man Zach Hoffman would apply the tag on Taylor, but was unable to hold onto the baseball.
Tadarious Hawkins then received an intentional walk to load the bases for
Conner Brackhahn. Brackhahn would hit a deep fly ball to the base of the left-field fence which resulted in a base hit to score Fields.
AJ Kruzel would provide the Reddies with their seventh run of the game when he hit a sacrifice fly to left field that would score Reynolds.
The Reddies weren't done as
Carlos Rodriguez would single up the middle to score Hawkins, with Brackhahn advancing from first to third.
After Rodriguez stole second, Mayall reached on an infield single with the Reddies being aggressive on the bases scoring Brackhahn from third while Rodriguez would come all the way home from second.
St. Cloud State threatened in the eighth-inning scoring a run and loading the bases. However, relief pitcher
Jordan Taylor would get Karl Sorensen to ground into an inning ending double-play.
Hayden Daniel would come into pitch the ninth-inning for the Reddies and the Huskies would tag him for three straight hits to lead off the inning.
The sophomore from Bryant, Ark. would settle down and get out of the inning with the help of his defense including a snap throw from Reynolds behind the plate to pick off Kyle Lieser at first base.
The Reddies ended the Huskies' 21-game winning streak and gave Miks his first loss of the year as he fell to 10-1.
Mayall led the Reddie offense going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in, while Johnson had a double, home runs and three runs batted in. Â Fields and
Hayden Lessenberry also had two hits each.
