Reddies Face Road Challenge Against Arkansas Tech

Henderson State will make its second consecutive road trip as the No. 7 Reddies travel to Russellville to face Arkansas Tech with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. at Thone Stadium.
 
Arkansas Tech is 2-0 at home this year and have won seven of its last eight games in Russellville. The Wonder Boys enter the game with a 2-2 record overall following a 28-21 loss last week at Southern Arkansas.
 
The Reddies are coming off a 45-17 win over Southwestern Oklahoma extending their GAC win streak to 13 games.
           
Henderson has used a balanced offensive attack this season averaging 223.5 yards passing per game and 208.2 yards rushing. The Reddies rank fourth in the GAC in total offense averaging 431.8 yards per contest.
 
Andrew Black has been a duel threat averaging 199.5 yards passing and 49.5 yards rushing per game as the Reddie quarterback. The sophomore from Tyler, Texas has completed 65.6 percent of his passes (63-of-93) and has carried the ball 37 times for 198 yards. 

Evan Lassiter backs up Black and has completed 9-of-14 passes for 96 yards with two touchdown tosses.
 
Jeremy Wilson leads Henderson's ground game averaging 80.8 yards per game which ranks seventh in the league. He gained 100 yards for the second consecutive time last week against Southwestern Oklahoma.
 
Jaquan Cole follows Wilson averaging 63.5 yards per contest. The 2015 GAC Offensive Player of the Year has 254 total yards on 48 carries for an average of 5.3 yards per attempt.           

Henderson's defense leads the league and ranks third nationally in turnovers with 14 including eight fumble recoveries. The Reddies have totaled 32 tackles for lost yardage including a league best 14 sacks.
 
The Reddies allow just 315.8 yards and 14.5 points per game, with both ranked second in the GAC.
 
Cameron Sonnier leads the defensive unit with 28 tackles including 5.5 tackles for lost yardage. Dondre Wright follows with 24 stops to go along with a sack, interception and a pass breakup.            

Sheldon Watson has come up big in the secondary having 14 tackles, three interceptions and a 44-yard scoop-and-score.
           
Arkansas Tech averages 403.0 yards of offense per game which ranks sixth in the GAC.
 
Ty Reasnor began the year as the starting quarterback and has completed 48-of-78 passes for 727 yards. Last week against Southern Arkansas the junior from Cashion, Okla. exited game early due to an injury.
 
Jabyes Cross moved from his wide receiver position and took over for Reasnor, completing 7-of-16 for 77 yards. The junior from Riveria Beach, Fla. is set to start at quarterback on Saturday. Cross has been ATU's top receiver with 14 catches for 252 yards. He is also a threat on special teams ranking third in the GAC in kickoff returns averaging 34.5 yards per return.
 
Bryan Allen heads up the ATU ground game averaging 63.8 yards per contest. He totaled 98 yards in week two against Oklahoma Baptist.        

Braden Stringer follows with 177 yards on 30 attempts for an average of 44.3 yards per game.
 
Arkansas Tech ranks fourth in the GAC in total defense allowing 334.2 yards and 19.5 points per game.
 
The Wonder Boys are led by linebacker Seth Culp who has 44 tackles on the year. Defensive back Cua' Rose follows with 22 stops.
 
Special teams could be a big factor in Saturday's game. Arkansas Tech ranks second in the league in kickoff return average at 30.0 yard per return and first in punt return average at 16.1 yards.      

Stringer is the top punt returner in the GAC averaging 16.1 yards.
 
Matthew Shade leads the league in punting averaging 46.5 yards per boot.

Arkansas Tech and Henderson State meet for the 92nd time in a series that dates back to 1920. HSU leads the all-time series at 44-42-5 following HSU's 17-7 win last season. HSU has won the last five meetings and six of the last seven games. Scott Maxfield has a 6-4 record all-time against Tech.

The broadcast team of Phil Elson, RJ Hawk and Kevin Rodgers will call all the action of Reddies football with the Domino's Pregame Show set for 5 p.m.

NOTES
• Safety Sheldon Watson has recorded an interception in each of the last three games.
           
Houston Ray has 38 career field goals which is second in HSU history.  The HSU record is 41 by Bo Adkisson from 1974-77. Ray also ranks third in extra-points made with 113. Adkisson made 119 PATs in 149 attempts from 1974 to 1977, while Charles Gonsalves holds the record with 132 (141 att.) from 2011 to 2014.
           
• Punter Cody Mikell has been impressive to start the season averaging of 43.8 yards per kick including five inside the 20. Mikell leads the GAC and ranks 7th nationally in punting average.     
 
• Freshman defensive end Robert Thomas is following his father's footsteps and is already doing the name proud. The son of former Reddie and Dallas Cowboy Robert Thomas IV, Thomas has been used in short yardage situations on offense having scored a rushing touchdown in each of the last three games. Defensively, the product of Cedar Hill, Texas has eight tackles including one for lost yardage.  
The elder Thomas was middle linebacker for the Reddies from 1993 to 1996. He closed out his collegiate career as the school's all-time leading tackler with 388 tackles.
Thomas was signed as a free agent by the Dallas Cowboys in 1998. He made the Cowboys final roster and spent his time playing mostly on special teams.   
In 1999 he became the Cowboys' starting fullback, after Daryl Johnston suffered a career-ending neck injury.      
During his time with the Cowboys, he served primarily as Emmitt Smith's lead blocker for four of his five seasons, eventually paving the way as Smith ran for 109 yards on 24 carries, while becoming the NFL's all-time leading rusher versus the Seattle Seahawks on October 27, 2002.
