Box Score Henderson State lost for the third time at home as Southern Nazarene scored 28 second-half points to beat the Reddies 42-24, Saturday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium/Ruggles Field in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Southern Nazarene, 3-2 on the season, totaled nearly 250 yards of offense in the second half and took advantage of a pair of Henderson interceptions to record the victory.
Henderson State quickly fell behind 14-0 as Southern Nazarene scored on its opening possession, driving 53 yards on 9 plays capped off by a 2-yard run by Reese Carlson.
The Crimson Storm defense then put points on the board as Sam Hunter intercepted a
Evan Lassiter pass and scampered 60-yards to pay dirt.
The Reddies got on the board late in the first quarter as
Andrew Black scored on a 5-yard rush to cut the deficit to 14-7 with 26 remaining in the quarter.
Henderson tied the score just before half as Lassiter hooked up with
John Murray for a 15-yard strike.
SNU took the lead on its first possession of the second-half driving the ball 75 yards on 6 plays with Jacob Spady connecting with Devan Brady for a 14-yard score.
Henderson quickly moved down the field on its first possession of the second half with the help of a 37-yard pass play from Lassiter to
Fernando Van Hook down to the SNU 17. The Reddies had to settle for 26-yard field goal by
Julio Cervantes.
Again Spady orchestrated another lengthy drive for the Crimson Storm going 81 yards on 12 plays with Reid Roelofs pulling in a 26-yard touchdown reception to make the score 28-17.
The Reddies, 2-3 on the season, answered with a 7-yard run by Black late in the third quarter. The big play of the drive was a 37-yard connection from Lassiter to
Austin Bennett.
Southern Nazarene tacked on two more scores in the final quarter with the help of a pair of interceptions.
The Reddies totaled 461 yards of offense while the Crimson Storm finished with 342 yards.
Lassiter completed 26-of-45 pass for 276 yards, while Black was 3-of-4 for 42 yards plus gaining an additional 55 yards rushing.
Cecil Langston led the Reddie ground game with a career-high 71 yards on 12 attempts.
Bennett was the recipient of five passes for 84 yards, while Van Hook totaled 5 catches for 63 yards.
Sheldon Watson had 11 tackles to lead the Henderson defense, while also collecting his fourth interception of the year.
Sam Johnson had six tackles including 2 ½ stops for lost yardage and
Malik Brown added seven tackles.
Henderson will put its NCAA Division II record 28-game road winning streak on the line as the Reddies travel to Shawnee, Okla. to face Oklahoma Baptist next Saturday with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
