ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State will take its three-game winning streak on the road Thursday when it travels to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m. in Alva, Oklahoma.
REDDIES REPORT
- The Reddies picked up two massive wins last week by defeating Oklahoma Baptist 83-70 and defending league champion Southern Nazarene 74-55. Both teams were picked in the Top-3 in the 2019-20 GAC Preseason Poll. The victories improved HSU to 4-2 in the league and into a four-way tie for second place in the conference standings.
- Henderson has been getting it done on the defensive end of the court this season and has staked its claim as perhaps the best defensive team in the conference. The Reddies are fifth in all of NCAA DII and lead the GAC in field goal percentage defense (37.9% shooting for opponents). The next closest conference team is holding foes to a shooting percentage of 42.3%. HSU is also 11th in the country in turnovers forced (18.8 per game), 16th in steals (9.6 per game), and 18th in turnover margin (+4.6).
- Superior depth has been one of the keys for the Reddies this year. Henderson boasts 10 players who average 13 or more minutes per game, including seven who average seven or more points per contest. Chris Parker has led HSU in scoring this season (16.2 points per game) and has been the team's leading scorer in eight of its 12 contests.Â
- HSU has gotten superb shooting recently from guards Anthony Lupardus and Chris Owens. Lupardus is shooting 57.7% from the floor and 58.8% from the 3-point line since Nov. 23, while Owens is shooting just under 72% from the field in his last five games (23-of-32). Owens hit three-straight 3-pointers against Southern Nazarene in the first half to help the Reddies break the game open.
- The Reddies are 7-7 all-time against NWOSU but have dropped four of the last five meetings in Alva, Oklahoma. Henderson's last victory in Percefull Fieldhouse came on Feb. 23, 2017 when it defeated the Rangers 87-79.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA
- NWOSU enters Thursday night's contest 4-8 overall and 1-5 in GAC play. The Rangers have played a gauntlet of the league's top teams through six games, which includes Southern Nazarene, East Central, UAM, Southern Arkansas, Oklahoma Baptist and Southeastern Oklahoma. Northwestern is led by first year head coach Vinay Patel.
- Offensively, the Rangers look to guard Parrish Hewit, who averages a team-leading 15.5 points per game this season and scored a season-high 31 against East Central. As a team, NWOSU is last in the GAC in scoring offense (67.3 points per game) and scoring margin (-8.1). Northwestern is 11th in the league in both team field goal percentage (41.2%) and 3-point field goal percentage (31.4%).
- On the defensive end of the court, NWOSU has been strong and ranks third in the conference in both field goal percentage defense (42.6% shooting for opponents) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (31.8% shooting).Â
