ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State travels on Saturday to face off with Arkansas-Fort Smith at 4 p.m. in its first true DII road contest of the 2021-22 season.
REDDIES REPORT
- The Reddies are 2-1 on the year after dispatching NAIA member Texas College 79-60 on Wednesday night in their home opener at the Duke Wells Center. HSU led by 29 points at halftime and has 12 different players score in the comfortable win. Henderson out-scored the Steers 30-6 in second-chance points and 44-22 in paint points.
- Both Graham Chenault and Tomislav Miholjcic had career highs against Texas College. Chenault finished 4-for-6 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc to score 10 points, while Miholjcic played a career-best 21 minutes, grabbed eight rebounds and had 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.Â
- Through three contests, Malik Riddle leads Henderson in scoring with an average of 11 points per game. He scored 11 in the victory over Missouri Western and had a season-high 15 in the win on Wednesday. Riddle is also HSU's leading rebounder (5.7 per game) and is 4-for-8 from beyond the 3-point line this season.
- Scoring has been very balanced for the Reddies through three contests. Riddle is the only player averaging double figures, but Henderson has nine players who are currently averaging six or more points per game. As a team, HSU is shooting 43% from the field and just under 35% from three.
- HSU has taken care of the ball and hit the glass hard early in its 2021-22 campaign. The Reddies have a +5.3 rebounding margin and +5.0 turnover margin three games into the year. Henderson has also been excellent at the free throw line and is 46-of-60 (76.7%) as a team.
- Henderson has played Arkansas-Fort Smith just twice in the last decade and has not faced the Lions since November 16, 2013. Saturday is the fourth meeting all-time between the two programs and UAFS won the last matchup 84-77 in Fort Smith.Â
SCOUTING ARKANSAS-FORT SMITH
- UAFS welcomes Henderson State to town on Saturday with a 1-2 record on the year. The Lions picked up their first win of the season on Thursday over University of the Ozarks, 90-33. Fort Smith dropped two games at the Lone Star-Rocky Mountain Challenge to Black Hills State and Metro State.
- Sharpshooting guard Matthew Wilson has been the catalyst offensively for UAFS early this season. Wilson leads the team in scoring (15.7 points per game) and is shooting 41.2% from beyond the arc. The Farmington, Arkansas native had 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting against Ozarks on Thursday.Â
- As a team, the Lions are shooting 44.9% from the floor and 31.5% from three through three contests. UAFS has struggled mightily at the line, where it is just 21-of-40 (52.5%) this season. Fort Smith is turning the ball over just 10.3 times per game and has a +6.3 rebounding margin thus far.
- Fort Smith is led by coaching legend Jim Boone, who is in his third year with the program but 36th year of coaching overall at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels. Boone is currently ranked eighth nationally in wins among active coaches (578) and is 32nd all-time in NCAA history.Â
