ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State makes the short trip across the road on Monday night to face Ouachita Baptist at 7:30 p.m. in the second Battle of the Ravine matchup of the men's basketball season.
REDDIES REPORT
- Henderson suffered a loss at the hands of Southern Arkansas for the third time on Thursday. HSU fell 73-68 at the Duke Wells Center but held a 13-point advantage in the first half against the Muleriders. SAU's hot 3-point shooting (11-of-22) turned the game around and proved to be the Reddies' undoing in a tight loss.
- Damian Dear had his best game of the season on Saturday for HSU. The junior from Jackson, Mississippi scored a career-best 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor to lead Henderson in scoring. Dear is averaging 9.6 points per game and shooting 43.3% from beyond the arc.
- HSU remains fifth in the GAC in both scoring offense (73.0) and scoring defense (71.5). Henderson is one of just two teams in the league to rank inside the Top-5 of both categories. The Reddies have also proved to be one of the best free throw shooting teams in the conference and are hitting on 71.7% of its shots as a team.Â
- Shooting from deep continues to be a thorn in HSU's side. The Reddies were just 3-of-14 from behind the 3-point line against SAU on Saturday — the fifth time this season they have made five or less in a game. Henderson's best shooting game of the year came in the first meeting against OBU when it hit 14 triples.Â
- The Reddies dominated the last time these two teams met. HSU won 96-67 in the Duke Wells Center behind 32 points from Malik Riddle. It was the largest margin of victory for Henderson against Ouachita Baptist since 2003. The Reddies are aiming for their sixth-straight victory over their rivals on Monday night, which would tie the longest streak by either side since 1999-2001.
SCOUTING OUACHITA BAPTIST
- OBU enters Monday night's contest 2-6 overall and 2-5 in GAC play. The Tigers picked up their second win of the year on Saturday with a 71-62 victory at Harding. Both of Ouachita Baptist's two wins this season have been over the Bisons.
- Kendarious Smith leads Ouachita in scoring with an average of 14 points per game on 44.7% shooting from the field. Smith has led OBU in scoring in three of the last four games and has scored 16 or more points in four-straight contests. Guard DJ Kane has become the Tigers' most consistent outside shooter and has hit 15 of OBU's 50 total 3-pointers in 2021.Â
- Ouachita has struggled on the defensive end of the floor this season. The Tigers are 10th in the GAC in scoring defense (77.1) and last in field goal percentage defense (47.6%). Six of OBU's eight opponents have shot 50% or better from the floor, including HSU, who shot a season-best 50% from the field and 48.3% from three in the first meeting.
