ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — After a comeback win on the road in Oklahoma, Henderson State faces No. 1 seed UAM for a fifth time on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with a berth in the GAC Tournament Championship on the line.
REDDIES REPORT
- Henderson (11-8) advanced to its third-straight GAC Tournament semifinal round with a gutsy 60-57 road win over No. 3 seed Southern Nazarene on Wednesday in Bethany, Oklahoma. HSU trailed by nine points with less than five minutes to play but out-scored SNU 17-5 down the stretch to earn a fifth meeting with UAM on Friday.
- Raekwon Rogers and Quawn Marshall both came up big for HSU when it mattered most against the Crimson Storm. Rogers had a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting while Marshall had 15 points and hit four 3-pointers. Marshall scored the last six points for the Reddies and made the game-winning bucket with 12 seconds left.
- The Reddies have won five-straight GAC Tournament games going back to last season. It is the longest GAC Tournament winning streak by any team in the league since SNU won seven-straight from 2017 to 2019. Henderson is looking to become just the fourth program in conference history to play in the tournament title game in back-to-back seasons, joining Arkansas Tech (2012, 2013), UAM (2017, 2018) and SNU (2018, 2019).
- UAM has been Henderson's kryptonite in the last several seasons. The Reddies have lost 12 of their last 13 meetings with the Weevils, including all four matchups this year. HSU has not won inside Steelman Fieldhouse since Jan. 31, 2015. UAM defeated Henderson 72-59 in Monticello less than a week ago in the regular season finale for both teams.
- In their four previous meetings with UAM this season, the Reddies have shot under 43% from the floor each time. On the other side, the Weevils have shot 46% or better from the field in every matchup with Henderson this year. HSU's worst shooting game of the season came against Monticello in the season finale last Saturday (36.4%).
SCOUTING ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
- Arkansas-Monticello (14-4) got its 2021 GAC Tournament run started in style on Wednesday night when it blew out Southeastern Oklahoma State 94-63 to advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 seed from the Eastern Division hit 13 3-pointers in the win — nine of which came from Miles Daniels, who finished with 27 points.Â
- UAM has won three-straight games and six of its last seven overall. The Weevils are seeking their first appearance in the GAC Tournament Final since 2018 when they fell to SNU 62-57. Monticello is 8-2 at home this season and 30-9 overall at Steelman Fieldhouse since the start of the 2018-19 campaign.
- The Weevils are No. 10 in all of NCAA DII in 3-point field goal percentage (40.5%). UAM has shot 40% or better from beyond the arc in 11 of its 18 games this season. Daniels has been one of the most prolific shooters nationally and is fifth in the country in made 3-pointers (63) while also ranking 15th in 3-point field goal percentage (46.3%).
