ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State looks to stretch its winning streak to three games on Saturday when it travels to Monticello, Arkansas to face UAM at 4 p.m. The Weevils are the first opponent HSU has faced twice this season.
REDDIES REPORT
- The Reddies grinded out another victory on Thursday over rival Ouachita Baptist, 59-56. Henderson's defense, which has become a staple of the program, was dominant and held the Tigers to 23.1% shooting in the second half to erase a seven-point halftime deficit. HSU has now won six games this year when trailing at the break.Â
- Through eight conference games, Henderson has staked its claim as one of the premier defensive team in the GAC. The Reddies are No. 1 in the league in field goal percentage defense (41.5% shooting for opponents), No. 1 in steals (9.6 per game) and second in scoring defense (66.2) behind only UAM, who has played two less games than HSU.
- Yuri Swinford had the best game of his career on Thursday against Ouachita. The senior from Bloomington, Illinois finished with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, seven rebounds and three assists. Swinford scored 14 of his 20 in the second half and hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half to help swing momentum.
- HSU's extreme depth has been on display this season. The Reddies have nine players that are averaging more than 17 minutes per game and a 10th who plays over 11 minutes per contest. Nine different players average six or more points and Henderson has not had the same player lead the team in scoring in consecutive contests yet this year.
- The Reddies have not won on the road in Monticello since Jan. 31, 2015. The Weevils have won the last eight meetings in Steelman Fieldhouse and 13 of the last 15 overall.
SCOUTING ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO
- Arkansas-Monticello is 8-4 on the year and 4-2 in GAC play. Since losing to Henderson 54-50 in the conference opener, UAM has won four of its last five league games.
- Defensively, the Weevils are stout. UAM is holding GAC opponents to 62 points per game and 41.6% shooting from the floor. The only conference team to score more than 61 points against Monticello this season is first-place Southeastern Oklahoma (85).
- Guard Richard Feagin Jr. leads the Weevils in scoring (13.3 points per game), while both Ray Price and Josh Williams average 11.8 points per contest. Price shoots 51.6% from the field and 48.1% from beyond the arc this season.
- Turnovers hurt UAM in the first meeting with HSU. Monticello committed 27 to Henderson's 15 and took 21 less shots than the Reddies, who shot 34.5% and won the game.
