GAME NOTES
Â
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – 48 hours after posting their biggest win of the season, Henderson State will look to make it an encore with a matchup against the GAC-leading Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm inside the Sawyer Center Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m.
Â
REDDIES REPORT
The Reddies were faced with an 11-point deficit with 17:25 remaining against Oklahoma Baptist before
Franck Kamgain scored 14 of HSU's next 21 points to spur on a 21-8 run that gave Henderson the lead for good. Over the final 17 and a half minutes, Kamgain and company shot 14-of-23 (60.9%) from the floor.
Â
The Reddies have found a scoring rhythm that has them winners in five of their last six contests. In eight consecutive games, HSU has boasted three or more players who have scored in double digits. Henderson never had more than a four-game stretch of such a feat last season. In that eight-game span, Kamgain and
Alvin Miles have averaged 15.4 and 11.3 points per game, respectively.
Â
11 games into the 2022-23 season and big man
Tomislav Miholjcic is having a career season, averaging 10.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting a GAC-best 67.6 percentage from the field. The program record for greatest single season field-goal percentage is 68.0 percent set by Larry Ducksworth during the 1966-67 season on a minimum of 200 attempts.
Â
The magic number for Henderson's offense is 75. When scoring at least 75 points, the Reddies are 6-0. When scoring under 75, they are 1-4. Henderson will have its work cut out against the Crimson Storm, with SNU leading the conference in scoring defense at 60.9 point per game while HSU is averaging 72.5 points per outing.
Â
Henderson will be looking for its first victory over Southern Nazarene since the GAC Championship Quarterfinals on March 3, 2021.
Malik Riddle, as the only starter from that game to still be on HSU's roster, finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. Saturday will be the 29th all-time meeting between the two clubs with the Crimson Storm holding the edge, 18-10. Â Â
Â
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NAZARENE
The Crimson Storm come into this weekend's matchup receiving votes in the latest NABC Top-25 poll. Southern Nazarene is currently riding an eight-game winning streak, including getting off to a 5-0 start in GAC play. Most recently, SNU defeated Ouachita Baptist, 74-66, marking its seventh straight victory at home.
Â
Similar to Oklahoma Baptist, Southern Nazarene has four guys who are averaging over 11 points per game, led by sophomore Tyler McGhie with 16.0 points per game. Both McGhie and the team's second leading scorer Javon Jackson (14.7 ppg) are also shooting over 40.0 percent from beyond the arc.
Â
Offensively, SNU is averaging 72.4 points per game compared to HSU's 72.5. The key to their eight-game winning streak, however, is the Crimson Storm's defense, which has held its last eight opponents under 67 points. The most damage Southern Nazarene does on the offensive end is from three, where it is second in the GAC at 40.8 percent.
