ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Head coach
Jimmy Elgas and his staff remain hot on the recruiting trail, bringing in junior-college transfers
Xavier Owens and
Nehikhare Igiehon from Angelina College for the 2024-25 season.
"We are beyond excited to add Xavier and Nehikhare to our team at Henderson," Elgas said. "Attending a winning program at Angelina College, they come from one of the most outstanding programs in one of the toughest regions in NJCAA basketball.
"JJ Montgomery is a great head coach who requires his kids to work, improve and compete on a daily basis. We are expecting a very positive impact from these young men and to continue the vast success we have experienced here at HSU."
Owens, a 6 foot 4 inch tall guard from Houston, Texas, was named Second Team All-Region and Second Team All-Conference during the 2023-24 campaign. Owens led Angelina College in scoring at 12.3 points per game, shooting 54.3 percent from the floor and 37.7 percent from three-point range. Owens was also second on the team with 6.4 rebounds per game.
"Xavier is an extremely versatile wing player who has the ability to impact the game from a defensive and offensive perspective," Elgas said. "We love his mentality to score, rebound and make others better. While Xavier is a great player, he is an even better person, having been raised by his mother who played at the University of Louisiana."
Igiehon backed up Owens in the scoring department while with the Roadrunners, scoring a team second-best 11.0 points per game with a 59.3 field-goal percentage while pacing the team on the glass with 6.6 rebounds per game.
A 6 foot 7 inch forward from Austin, Texas, Igiehon joined Owens on the All-Region and All-Conference teams, taking Second Team in both categories.
"We are tremendously excited to add a player of Nehikhare's ability to the program," Elgas said. "We had a need to sign an impact forward since we are losing [
Tomislav Miholjcic] and [
KJ Stewart] and we feel we did exactly that with our signing of Nehikhare."
He is a great athlete, moves great for someone of his size, has long arms and is tenacious running the floor and rebounding the basketball. His best ball is without question ahead of him, simply having scratched the surface of his tremendous upside."
Owens and Igiehon join signees Jameel Wesley from Little Rock, Ark. (Little Rock Christian Academy) and Rondae Hill from Shreveport, La. as part of the incoming 2024-25 class to Arkadelphia.
