After serving the previous two seasons as an assistant coach in the Henderson State women's basketball program Chris Oestreich was tabbed as the Interim Head Coach for the 2011-12 season, and on Monday night Oestreich picked up his first win at HSU after his team handled LeTourneau University, 73-45.
The Lady Reddies (1-0) got off to a quick start against the visiting Lady Yellow Jackets (0-1) as they opened the game on a 17-0 run. LeTourneau did not record their first basket until the 12:05 mark in the first half. At one point in the first half the Lady Reddies held a lead as large as 20 points. For the period the Lady Reddies shot 46 percent from the floor making good on 15 of their 33 attempted field goals.
Cheree Freeman and Tesla Cowart were the shooting standouts for the first half as the pair scored double figures, missing only one field goal between the two. Freeman, who had 10 first-half points, was 3-of-4 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Cowart, who was making her collegiate debut, poured in 11 points and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field, including an impressive 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The second half was much of the same for the Lady Reddies as they began to distance themselves from the Lady Yellow Jackets. To start the second half the Lady Reddies went on a 5-0 run to push their advantage to over 20 points. From that point on in the game the Lady Reddies led by at least 20 points. Their largest lead, which came late in the game, was 31 points.
Offensively, the Lady Reddies shot 43 percent (26-of-60) for the game and their defense limited the Lady Yellow Jackets to a 26 percent (14-of-54) shooting performance. Their defensive also forced 28 LeTourneau turnovers. 13 of those turnovers were steals.
Every player that entered the game for the Lady Reddies scored at least two points. Four players in total scored in double figures. Freeman led all scorers with 19 points. Cowart was second with 15 points. Sheay Longstaff and Joycelyn Taylor were the other two to score in double figures. Longstaff had 11 points and Taylor ended with 10 points. Jill Temples led all players with five assists.
The Lady Reddies are back in action on November 18th as they will travel to Commerce, Texas to take on Texas A&M-Commerce. Tip-off for the game is set for 6:00 p.m.
