Henderson State held off a late West Florida charge to beat the Argos 76-70, Friday at the UWF Classic in Pensacola, Fla.
The Lady Reddies, 4-0 on the season, went on a 10-0 run late in the first-half and held a 34-18 lead with 3:38 remaining in the opening 20 minutes.
Chrystal Harrison started things with a pair of a free throws at the 6:07 mark, followed by a fast break layup by Cheree Freeman to increase the lead to 10.
Harrison and Freeman both teamed for the next six points to give HSU its largest lead of the game.
West Florida, 1-5 on the year, rallied to cut the deficit to 34-31 by the end of the half as Desiree Doty sparked a UWF 13-0 run with a three-point basket.
With West Florida leading 48-47 with 12:32 left to play in the game, Sheay Longstaff gave Henderson State the lead for good with a 3-point field goal with 12:18 to play in the game.
Each time the Lady Reddies increased their lead, West Florida would answer.
Henderson State was forced to make free throws down the stretch for the win.
The Lady Reddies converted on 9-of-12 free throws in the final minute of the game to secure the win. Jill Temples was solid at the line making 9-of-12 free throws herself.
Freeman led Henderson with 18 points, while Harrison had 17 points and 9 rebounds.
Longstaff scored 16 points including five key 3-point field goals, with Destiny Smith dominating the boards with 15 rebounds.
Octavia Bearden led West Florida with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Henderson State shot 25-for-55 from the field for 46 percent, while UWF was limited to 36 percent shooting (24-of-66).
The Lady Reddies will next face Alabama-Huntsville, Saturday at noon in the final day of the West Florida Classic.
