In a game that had 12 lead changes, Alabama-Huntsville rallied from a 6-point deficit in the final 43 seconds to beat Henderson State 76-75, Saturday at the West Florida Classic in Pensacola, Fla.
Leading 73-67 with 43 seconds remaining, UAH's Bailie Robinson cut the deficit to four with 33 seconds left, scoring on an offensive rebound.
After a timeout, Henderson converted an easy breakaway basket with 27 seconds, however the basket was made at the wrong goal and HSU then led just 73-71.
Cheree Freeman increased the HSU lead back to four by sinking a pair of free throws, but UAH's Jordan Smith busted a 3-point basket to make the score 75-74 with 13 seconds remaining.
Freeman was again fouled but failed to make the frontend of a 1-and-1. UAH's Jasmine Hammon came away with the rebound and proceeded to go the distance for the game-winning basket for the Chargers.
“If there is such a thing as a good loss, this one was,” said HSU coach Chris Oestreich. “We did everything well except box out on defense. We fought back to get a lead, but a bizarre situation cost us and we will learn from it. I am still proud of how hard this team played.”
Henderson State, 4-1 on the year, trailed for most of the opening half and went into the locker room down 42-38.
The lead changed hands five times in the first 14 minutes of the second-half, until HSU's Sheay Longstaff hit a 3-point basket to start a 9-0 run for the Lady Reddies. Jill Temples, Chrystal Harrison and Destiny Smith all had buckets during the run as HSU led 68-62 with 4:51 remaining in the game.
The two teams traded baskets the next five minutes before UAH (3-1) began its surge in the final minute.
Freeman led the Lady Reddies with 22 points and 9 rebounds, while Longstaff added 11 and Smith chipped in with 10.
The Lady Reddies shot 43 percent from the field converting on 28-of-65 shots, while UAH hit on 27-of-72 shots for 38 percent.
