Junior guard Sheay Longstaff scored a season-high 22 points as she paced a Henderson State offense that scored over 80 points for the second straight game en route to an 83-54 blowout win over Philander Smith College in the nightcap of the first day of the Henderson State Alumni Classic held at the Duke Wells Center.
For the second straight game, Longstaff gave the Lady Reddies (6-1) the only lead they would need in the game as she drilled a trifecta on the team's first possession. The Topeka, Kans. native was on fire from beyond the arch for the game as she drained six shots from long range, and was an overall 8-of-15 (53 percent) from the field.
The Lady Reddies, who shot 36 percent (13-of-36) from the floor in the first half, held a lead as large as 17 points (28-11) with 5:28 remaining, but only led by six points, 32-26, heading into the break. Over the final 22 seconds of the half, Philander Smith went on a 5-0 mini run to cut the deficit to six points.
Philander Smith sustained the momentum from the run to end the first half into the second half and kept the Lady Reddies' lead under double figures for the first seven and a half minutes. A layup by rookie Aungelique Sledge at the 12:23 mark put the Lady Reddies back up by double figures for good.
A 10-0 run that began at the 9:03 mark and lasted two minutes gave HSU complete control of the game. The Lady Reddies would run their lead out to as high as 32 points before the final buzzer, and ended the game with a 29-point margin of victory, 83-54.
Nine Lady Reddies recorded a bucket in the game with Longstaff leading the team with her 22 points. Senior guard Cheree Freeman had a balanced stat sheet with 15 points, seven boards, three assists, two blocks, and a steal. Joycelyn Taylor added 12 points off the bench on the strength of 5-of-10 (50 percent) shooting from the field. The rookie Sledge also had a balanced game with a team-high 10 rebounds, eight points, and three steals.
The Lady Reddies will play the final game of the 2011 Henderson State Alumni Classic on Saturday, December 3rd against the University of Texas at the Permian Basin. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
