Henderson State could only muster 139 yards of total offense as the Reddies lost its home opener to Southwest Oklahoma State 17-13, Saturday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The Reddies, 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Great American Conference, totaled just 53 offensive plays averaging 2.6 yards per play, while SWOSU compiled 422 yards of offense on 88 plays.
SWOSU, 2-1 and 1-1, controlled the ball for 22 minutes in the first-half, but the Reddies found themselves down just 7-0 at the break.
The lone score of the half came with 3:30 to play in the opening quarter as Dustin Stenta hit Esau Bauknight with a 7-yard strike. The score was set up with a 42-yard toss to Eric Charles just one play earlier.
The SWOSU defense held the Reddies to 3-plays and out, on four of their five offensive possession in the opening half, with Henderson managing just one first-down in the half.
The Bulldogs went up 14-0 to begin the second-half, driving 96-yards on 13 plays. D.C Walker plunged in from a yard out with 6:02 to play in the quarter to give the visitors a 14-0 advantage.
Henderson's first score was set up by the defense as Chuck Obi intercepted a Stenta pass at the SWOSU 35 and returned it to the 23.
Kevin Rodgers entered the game replacing Nathan Nall at quarterback in the second-half. Rodgers threw his first collegiate touchdown as he hit Jazz Scott for a 9-yard score with 28 seconds left in the third quarter to make the score 14-7.
SWOSU was able to increase its lead to 17-7 with 9:47 left in the game when Colton Rainey hit a 35-yard field goal.
Nicholas Johnson set up the Reddies' next score with a 47-yard punt return down to the Bulldog 29 with a pair of personal foul penalties tacked on.
Two plays later, Rodgers hit Labroderick Barnett for an 8-yard score.
However, Charles Gonsalves' point after hit the upright and the score stood 17-13 with 5:54 left in the game.
The Reddies got the ball back with 4:08 to play in the game. Rodgers moved the Reddies down to the SWOSU 39 and faced 4th-and-5. Turell Williams got the call but fumbled the football to end Henderson's chances of a comeback.
Senta had a career night for SWOSU, completing 37-of-52 passes for 330 yards. Eric Charles totaled 12 receptions for 129 yards, while D.C. Walker rushed for 92 yards on 25 carries.
Rodgers completed 14-of-24 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns, while Ge'rell James caught six passes for 40 yards.
Keaton Stigger led the defense with 11 tackles, and a fumble recovery, while Maxie Graham and Wesley Brady had 9 tackles each.
SWOSU controlled the football eating up 41:17 off the clock, while the Henderson offense was on the field for just 18:43. Henderson had just nine 1st-downs in the game and were 2-of-12 on 3rd down conversions.
Both teams had their fair share of penalties as the Reddies committed 13 infractions for 149 yards, while SWOSU had 14 penalties for 139 yards.
