Coming into this afternoon's game against East Central University, the Henderson State Women's Basketball team boasted one of the most potent offenses in the Great American Conference, averaging 80.0 points per game. On Saturday, the Lady Reddies' offensive production was even greater as they put up 96 points and cruised past East Central by a score of 96-77.
Fueling the 96-point outburst was a 54 percent (38-of-70) shooting percentage from the floor for the game, and having five Lady Reddies: Cheree Freeman, Crystal Harrison, Sheay Longstaff, Destiny Smith, and Joycelyn Taylor contribute at least 14 points. The Lady Reddies (9-3, 2-0 GAC) not only got great production from those five in double figures, but for the second straight game all nine players to play scored.
The Lady Tigers (2-10, 0-2 GAC) did hold a couple of leads in the game, but each lead came in the first two minutes of the game and the lead was no larger than two points.
Both teams were scoring efficiently in the first half as the Lady Tigers shot 52 percent (16-of-31) and the Lady Reddies were even better shooting an impressive 61 percent (22-of-36). The biggest difference between the two teams in the first half came from beyond the arc. The Lady Reddies made good on 6-of-9 (67 percent) shots from deep, while the Lady Tigers were just 3-of-8 (38 percent). The overall strong shooting performance gave the Lady Reddies a 12-point cushion into the locker room, 52-40.
The second half was much of the same from the Lady Reddies in terms of scoring as they threatened to reach the century mark in scoring for what would have been the second time in the last three games. In that half, the Lady Reddies shot 47 percent on 16-of-34 shooting. In that same time, they were especially good from the charity stripe going 10-of-11 (91 percent).
Statistically, Freeman led the team in scoring with 17 points, and was just as solid defensively coming away with a game-high five steals and two blocks. Smith followed with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, she also had seven rebounds, and four steals. Taylor was next in line with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Harrison and Longstaff each ended with 14 points. Harrison was 7-of-11 from the floor and pulled down seven rebounds. Longstaff was once again a sharp-shooter from deep as she knocked down 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Lady Reddies dished out 20 assists. Shillallie Jones led the team with six. Krystal Beachum had five assists, and Jill Temples got into the act with four of her own.
The Lady Reddies will now take to the road as they will take on Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Thursday, January 12th. Tip-off for that game is set for 5:30 p.m.
